Hi:

Just wondering how you get yourself out of the rut when you become discouraged.  I am regretting quitting my stable job I hated to follow the dream.  I am only booking a few appointments daily and spending so much time marketing and making contacts.  My bank account is dwindling and I am worried.

Any ideas or have you expereienced this also?

thanks for any advice! :)

Denise thank you for this. You hit all the key points for me. I am so grateful for this board as well. I have learned so much this week alone. I'm trying to read an hour a night to gain more knowledge.

yes i am a newbie...Or newbie full time at it.  :)

What great advice Denise!

I totally agree with you, Denise, and I give you virtual high-fives for the thorough and well-written pointers!  I am just about to rebuild my business in my new community, about 45 miles north of where I had originally gotten started thanks to marrying a wonderful man who lived in the northern suburbs.  I made the decision to move my business closer to our home, and I finally found the right space.  I move in this week and will launch in October.  I'm thrilled but also a bit hesitant, but I keep telling myself that if I've built a business from scratch before, I can do it again!  But the pointers really help to trigger my ideas!

Another suggestion may be to try and coordinate with some local business owners to reward their clients with a discount or a free upgrade when they visit your business for a facial... ideas, florists/photographers/bridal boutiques, gyms/women's gyms, MDs or derms who maybe don't do facials in their office, massage therapists, dance studios, apartment complexes (offer a certificate for a discounted facial or free upgrade facial for every new lease or every re-signing as a thank you incentive!), personal trainers, etc.  All of these are businesses that complement ours.

I can relate to your frustration--one of the things that drives me nuts is that when the economy is not going so well, I do think that facials can be seen as a bit of a luxury and often are first to be cut (I know a lot of women who won't skimp on coloring their roots every 6 weeks, but they may put off their facials to save some money).  I have just accepted that even my best clients may not return monthly as we would love, but I absolutely agree with the send me 3 and your next is free idea!  That can triple your client base like Denise said.

I also do very well with retailing products, so when I figure the amount that I earn in commission, it can easily double my revenue per client, and this definitely helps!  I love to make double the money in the same amount of time--well as a disclaimer, I do allow 15 minutes consultation/home care explanation time and I find that it pays for itself and then some!

Good luck to you and keep us posted!  Don't give up--it's hard but rewarding!  Even if you have to supplement, you are worth it!

i am always looking for advise on retailing. during the facial? after? phrases that appeal to clients? any advise is appreciated. thanks :)

Emilie, these tips are great ! Thanks for sharing with some of us "newbies".

Denise, I just read your response, and it's right on target. At ASCP, we try to give our members many tips on how to succeed and build your esthetics practice, and one of my favorites is your #3: Give business cards or brochures to everyone you meet. You just never know who will turn into a client.

And, Angela, just remember that it may take time to build your client base and start making serious money, but if you just incorporate some of these ideas, it should give your business the jump start to keep you encouraged enough to keep on going! You made the first big step in reaching out for help! Good luck!

Great advice , I'm taking notes !

The economy is very bad in FL state. I wish you luck.

yes it surely is!!

Great info Denise! Thanks and bless you!

Always having both a small, short-term goal helps! For example, as Denise expressed, having a website built would help! (I suggest Weebly for the not-so HTML/CSS Savvy.) It only takes a couple days to get your info up and together. The next would be to get your Facebook page up, blog, etc.

The internet, though seen as a vast heartless void, it is a great source of inexpensive shameless self-plugging and advertisement. Use all forms of social media to your advantage!

You can do this! We're in the same boat. I'm 23, in the ever-expensive state of CA and, after having my license for only a few months, I'm already attempting to establish my own mobile business.

Good luck! Keep in touch. :)
