massage regulations
Hi Iam both a massage therapists and a Esthetician in california.... i have recently rented a space to another massage therapist who says at her past employment in cali... that she was allowed to cleanse, scrub, apply a mask and moisterizer to a clients face as long as she didnt do extractions.. that it was legal? im trying to find any regulations that say she can in cali. thanks for any responses. Hi! She can only do that if she has an aesthetician lic.
I've worked w many massage therapists.

um - no.
She is mistaken.
She may do facial massage only for health benefits, she may not do any beautifying treatments, that is NOT in the scope of practice of her massage license.

If you want to know for certain, you can contact either the Cosmetology Board and ask them about scope of practice for estheticians, or go the other route and contact the California Massage Therapy Council and ask them if MTs are allowed to do these things. In Louisiana and Texas you can do those, just no extractions or hair removal, I am both LMT 13yr/Esty 1+ as well. I was told they should be called facial treatments not facials.

I see it at many places around here...there are many massage therapists and cosmetologists doing facials...In my area there is maybe one Esthetician...and 5 businesses offering esthetic services. Grrrrr

I am in California and have worked in many, many spa's over the years as well as teach classes. Never heard of that before. Sounds to me like they were wanting a' two for one technician' and it's a load of baloney. It is withing the Estheticians scope to understand the skin and what products to use. That is not the scope for a massage therapist. bah! :)
