In addition to esthetics, anyone offer makeup artistry? Especially for bridal parties? I do a lot of this and would love to interact and share with others tips, product suggestions, marketing ideas, etc.

I started esthetics school specifically so wouldn't have to be a freelance makeup artist. In my area, it is hard to find photographers that will work time for photos... I haven't done bridal parties, and have yet to build a kit for professional use...being a broke student doesnt help lol. But I do have alot of ideas.
When I get my license and start work, I hope to use Jane Iredale makeup primarily...and add on what I think will work best for client. I am too aware of allergic reactions in cosmetics...
MArketing ideas-free consultation/colormatching, set up a package like trial runs, and then they choose what they like best. Discount on large parties...Those are probably common ideas...I'm still only a student. If I could I would work from the ground up-have a package that would give them great skin (facials, exfoliants etc...which would create the perfect canvas for makeup)
Hi Sara,
I know all too well what you're going through. I was a student 4 years ago, and honestly, partly went to school because of the horrible job market (I have a B.A. too) and needed to have something else under my belt. Yes, I love beauty and have a passion for skincare, and always loved doing makeup. I am NOW just starting to get going on this adventure. This year, I launched a business because I couldn't find a job in my own field of human resources and couldn't find an esthi job or cosmetics job (all department stores immediately reject my resume saying i'm not qualified... really?). Anyway, it's been a tough road this year. Never having money. Spending what I do have on products just to have appointments. Doing Groupons and Living Social deals, booking myself solid, yet waiting longer than anticipated to be paid by those companies for my work. It's very frustrating. But I networked quite a bit and found some ways to sell myself out there - I saved some money and did a little advertising for wedding makeup on two different sites, so that brides could see me. It has helped a little (I've only been featured for a month so far), and I am hoping it will pay off. Keep all the ideas that you have an write out a goal list. Hang it up somewhere nearby. I did this last year and update mine, cross off when I have reached a goal, then reflect at what I have accomplished. Relish in those small things. I understand exactly how it is. When do you graduate? Just network yourself a ton and show a lot of passion for what you do.
July 2013. CIDESCO certififed school, my Cidesco exam wont be until 2014. I too have a BS (crim, psyc/soc)and working with crazy ppl for min wage....yeah umm no...was very depressing and drove me crazy myself so I decided to go for something I loved. Makeup. Here was my thought process. there are zero makeup schools in the midwest...and I'm not interested in hair whatsoever....but hey Esthetics...SWEET. Lets do that...put off my student loans even more bwahahahaha.
But I lied I am now interested in hair...body hair...specidically removing it from the root by using a hot sticky liquid.
There isnt any makeup counters...I'm in the country country...I already drive an hour and half for school each day...but I live near a base, with two strip clubs, 2 dance clubs, near 1 college town...so Starting my own business should have a market,,,considering out of the 5 day spas...there is only esthetician in the bunch, I also have the option for wax queen considering not too many of these places offer brazillians...or even boyzillians,
OMG our paths are almost identical!! I got my BBA with a HR major and then I got my MHRM and could not find a job in human resources so I went and became an esthetician. Are you on theknot.com? Because I just got on that site about a month ago. I've been trying to network and etc but the first year is sooooo hard!! I'm about to take a threading class so I can offer a brow bar type of setup in my studio.
Hey Faith,
I am on the knot. It's expensive to advertise, but I at least get 4-5 hits per week, and I've only been on for a month, so I am hoping it'll just get even better with time. I also advertise on mywedding.com - try that one perhaps. I did a free site on weddingwire and have gotten hits just from the free site. I wishI could do something like threading - in WI there are a lot of limits and Cosmetologists are able to do a lot more than Esthys.
HI! I am an esthetician and I own my own studio. I am actually a makeup artist. I find that in my area more people are into makeup than skin care anyway. It's hard to get them to spend money on something they view as a luxury and not a necessity. But makeup, that's definitely a necessity here! I am actually launching my own makeup line and it will debut in November!!!
As far as a kit. It takes time to build a kit! (oh and tons of money lol) Honestly if you know how to custom blend a foundation all you need is some light pink tones, olive tones and brown tones and the appropriate adjusters. I learned that many artist were trying to get every color of foundation and it wasn't feasible.
I am working with a photographer and we have a shoot in about a month. We are doing some glamour shots. I'm excited for that and currently I'm thinking that makeup is the direction that I'm going to be heading in primarily. I'd love to swap ideas!
How exciting Faith !!! When do you plan on launching your line - or have you already ?
That is exciting!!
I hear ya - it's easier to find people that want their makeup done. Although, I stress the importance of maintaining skin health too. How else would your makeup look amazing if you didn't have beautiful skin? Well, not beautiful, but maintained by an esthetician.
For now, I use Smashbox, MAC, Stila, Too Faced (among my favorites) the majority of the time for makeup. Can anyone suggest the best airbrush makeup line? I'm looking into this for next year.

Ohh How does ppl like DUo that is non latex???? Duo glue...evidently I'm allergic too...I like revlon but I want something that will have staying power thru sweat.
I will be launching November 17, 2012. Thank you I am so excited. For some reason I'm not getting notifications that posts have been made :-(
Hey Vanessa! I am doing Columbia Cosmetics. I checked out Your Name and I didnt like their shadows. Columbia is a very reasonable price per piece so you can mark it up 3 times and its still a very reasonable price!
