one  think I like to do is fill out the paperwork with my client.  I let them fill out the name, date birth date and email address/phone number and go over all of the rest with them.  I think the initial consultation should be at least 10-15 minutes.

Hi, I think it would be nice to create a protocol for this process. What I typically do is go over the client intake form with them, then I try to get a better understanding of what their primary skin concern/concerns are, and what they hope to get out of the treatment. I then move on to briefly inform them about my process and what to expect during their first treatment. Total time for my consultation is typically 15 to 20 min max.

I feel the consultation process is critical as it sets the tone as per what the rest of the treatment relationship will look like.

Ok now here's the question I've been wondering lately..Do you include the consultation as part of the One hour facial? Like some clients are watching the clock and think you may have cut their facial short. It usually takes me 15 minutes to do consultation and then starting the facial..so by the time I am done it is at least an hour and a half. Is that typical for you guys too?

Hi Katrina,

Yes,i usually conduct my consultation/skin analysis with an express facial, that way I am only spending 15mins for the consultation, and then 30mins for the express facial, totaling 45mins. I try not to include my skin analysis/consultation with a full facial because I find it eats into my time and I don't want the client to feel he/she did not receive a full 60/75min facial. I usually rebook them for a full customized facial after the initial visit.

I have found that this works well for both myself and my clients.

I just ask them to come early...and I am in a position where I am not obligated to book back to back so I usually allow 30 min between clients so if they can't come early, the time evens out.

Katrina, I always book consultation time for a first time client in addition to the hour facial. I book an hour and ahalf for all first time facial clients. This gives me lots of time to go over their goals and additional time to discuss home care/retail without eating into their facial time.

I am so glad that we are talking about this! ASCP will have something exciting for you in the coming months but in the meantime, the protocol that I used was to create a "first time facial" service. Every time I had a new client I would book 1.5hr appointment. Consultation (I used ASCP's forms) would come first, I used a skin scanner so they could see their skin and then move to a 50 min treatment depending on their needs. After they would leave with written recommendations and a full outline of their particular skin i.e. skin type, conditions etc. I also worked with my manufacturer to be able to buy travel sizes to create a little gift with purchase to get them started. Most of the time they just purchased the products. Hope this helps a little,

Been a little busy this last week moving locations BUT thank you for all the responses.  Its always nice to hear how everyone else is finding success :)  Excited to find out more about what ASCP is about to bring to the table.
