I just got a text from a client that said her daughter is breaking out on her forehead and wants to know if she should stop using the products I recommended. This is the whole story...

Client is 14. Has mild acne. Good about washing her face.

She came in for her 1st facial and I gave her a bunch of samples. She loved them so she bought everything and came for another facial. Facials are gentle and hydrating. I'm not doing anything to irritate since she is young.

Home Care

Green Tea Cleanser

Blemish Control Cleanser- 3x a week

Cucumber Toner

Ageless Skin Serum

Light Aloe Moisturizer

SPF

I don't think there is anything that should be causing the breakouts. What is most frustrating is that they are so quick to stop these products but not all the other stuff before.

Anyway, any suggestions? I have responded to the text yet b/c I want to be able to say something smart. :) I know she shouldn't stop but I don't really know why she is breaking out unless she is doing something different (or hormones). And if she is doing something different, we know they won't tell us.

Please help! THANK YOU!! :)

I have not used SS products, but a glance at the list you stated suggests that at stronger cleanser may be needed, something with salicylic.  The only other products that might cause breakouts would be the moisturizer and/or SPF. I would make good on any exchanges for product change.  Tell her to come by for a quick glance at her skin to determine if it is an acne breakout, clogged pore, milia, etc.  Let her know you are with her to solve this issue.

Hope this helps.

Susan - the Blemish Cleanser does have salicylic in it.  I agree, have her come in and take a look at it.

I think the homecare sounds good and reasonable.  I would ask her to come in and see how bad the breakouts are.  Could they be over-reacting?  Once you see it, is it pustular?  Papular?  Closed comedomes?  Did she workout recently (sports) that caused perspiration?  Did she wax that area?  I'm also wondering why the forehead would breakout, but not the rest of the face.  Let's get some more information so we can determine how to treat it.

Does she have bangs?  Could it be a new styling product causing the breakout?

So I responded and told her not to stop the products and that these things can still happen even with a good regimen b/c of stress, pms, etc. I kind of wanted to see where the conversation was going to go. She replied (immediately!!) and said that her skin seems to be getting worse since she started these products. Frustrating! The 1st week she thought they were great and decided to buy everything and now the 2nd week thinks nothing is working.

My 2nd response to her was to come in and let me look at her skin and maybe we could add the Blemish Toner Pads and Blemish Spot Treatment (I would give as samples first). I also said that 2 weeks wasn't very long for skin to clear up. I haven't heard back from her yet so I don't know what is going to happen. I feel like she was expecting a miracle. Hopefully she will come in tomorrow so I can take a look and determine the next step.

Thanks for the quick replies, ladies. ;)

This has happened to some of my clients and what I believe is that she can be purging. I see my acne clients every two weeks to make adjustments to their home care. Explain to her that breakouts take weeks to develop under the skin and won't be seen for weeks. I ask my clients to give the products a full month. I don't believe that clean products like Skin Script will cause breakouts. The only reason I would tell a client to stop using a product if it is within 30 days of starting them is if she/he developes hives. That has never happen for me with SS but has with other lines. If you haven't already, really stress the importance of a healthy diet cutting out or down on salt, sugar, processes foods and any foods containing hormones like meats, soy and dairy. talk about adequate water consumption, stress reduction and getting enough sleep. I recommend icing for any acne lesions 2 x's daily 3-5 minutes only.

Thank you! I hate getting phone calls/texts and emails like this from clients (though they are few and far between)  because I know how good these products are and I am confident they won't cause breakouts. Convincing someone else that is another story. It's just interesting that they are so quick to stop what a professional tells them to do when they think it is causing a problem but they don't do that when their own solutions cause them problems. Seems so strange and backwards.

I feel really stressed out from this and it still isn't over b/c she has never responded from my last message. So I don't know what she is thinking. I have been very available and forthcoming with information and knowledge so I know I have done my part. I really just think she was expecting an overnight change and that just isn't realistic. I am honest with my clients and I tell them that nothing is going to happen that quickly but they hear what they want.

Thanks Denise for your input! :)

When a breakout is just in ONE area and not all over, you need to consider other causes.

Forehead - sweat, haircare products are the primary culprits.

Another problem could be makeup or coverup she is using.

I had one client that was doing great - but she insisted on using that darn Mary Kay scrub and make-up. Yuck.

oh - and I think you are right.

We all want an overnight improvement.

It's so important to keep expectations reasonable.

60-90 days to clear I think is reasonable.

It takes patience and commitment.

I had one Mom that expected ONE facial and NO product to do the trick!

People are so unrealistic in their expectations sometimes. One facial isn't going to solve any problem. :)

The mom finally just sent me another text today. Weird that this is such a problem but then ignored my messages for almost 3 days. Anyway, I am going to see her tomorrow and I will see what is going on. I may add the Blemish Toner Pads and Spot Treatment since she is saying her breakouts are worse than before.
