Can anyone help me out? I am a new esthetican renting a room in a salon. Can you give me ideas as to what I can do to really impress my clients? I'm looking to WOW anyone who comes into my room. I've been doing facials the most, but I feel I need to step it up a notch. I want them to leave feeling like they got the best service ever!

Did u burn your face? Was the steam too close? Should I limit how long I use it? I think with this new steamer I was using that it was too much steam and I could never get it adjusted correctly. I'd prefer not to use it, but what can I do for 10 mins instead? I'm afraid clients will get mad if I don't use it.

Monica- I use Rhonda Allison also, what is the specific product you use for extractions?

the h2o2 emulsion is a desincrustation liquid for deep impactions. The instructions say to steam skin for 10 minutes.  But my rep told me that I can use it with warm towels instead. Then proceed with extractions.  I would imagine that perhaps the steamer for 10 min will work better, but I just don't like using it :-)

Great questions!

No, my arm got burned and treatment had to end and I had to go to the ER.  I can't even remember how it happened, but it was bad! I hate using those things! I have worked at salons where it is required and sometimes people lift their arms to scratch their head or something, and there is risk that they might get burn, or even worse when the darn thing starts leaking! That is very hot!

If the steamer is blowing too much, get it farther away from the face.  I have heard that a good distance should be by the chest or diaphragm area. Some steamers are poor quality and you need to put the darn thing almost on top of the face for them to feel anything. I mean, something so simple can be so complicated.

I have had clients asking me "are you not using the steamer?"  They somehow think that I may be cheating on their treatment and missing a step.  I explain to them that new literature on skincare suggests that the steamer is unnecessary nowadays because the professional formulations allow the aesthetician to do better extractions with less complications.  There is better technology that will do a better job. (if you use newer technology with badass products, you won't have any problems whatsoever!)

The client will believe you (because it's true, first of all).  What can you do in those 10 minutes? I would never spend 10 minutes with a steamer.  They teach you that in school :-(

Instead, you'd probably use an enzyme to soften the oils to do extraction, correct? If so, work it up with manipulation and place a warm towel and keep your hands for just a couple of minutes on the clients face until the towel begins to cool down.  Remove the towel and proceed with your treatment. Now you should be ready for extractions, massage and so forth.

If you want to leave her with an exfoliant for about 5 minutes on before putting on the warm towel over her face, use the time to complete your skin analysis, and get to know your client. Ask her questions about what she uses at home, what she's planning to do over the weekend, etc.  They love to share with you (as long as you don't get too personal or being judgmental asking "why", for example).  I hate it when I get massage, facials or mani/pedis and they start asking me "why I don't have kids". Urgh!  They prefer that you don't talk to them during masking, so the best time is to talk to them up to when it's time for massage. Silence after that :-) That's when they are "healing".  After a super duper massage, they should fall asleep during the mask.  I usually just stay put and not make any noise, much less play with my cell phone.  That's my time, too, to collect myself, meditate on what I did right or not too well, think about ways to help the client achieve better results, think about which products I will be recommending, etc and start preparing myself mentally for the next client.  Also, depending on what line you decide to use, they have different protocols and you can adjust your timing at your own pace (since you're going solo).

Great information! Thank you! I know that my massages are excellent and I pretty much know when to speak to a client and when to let them relax. I'm just trying to figure out how to get these clients to really warm up to me. Maybe it's my stupid cheap steamer that is making my clients uncomfortable! That is the only difference in my procedures.

I speak to all my clients in a soft tone, give them ideas as to what they can do at home to care for their skin (without making it seem like I'm trying to sell them product), give them an excellent massage, and I don't talk while they are relaxing. This is a totally opposite side of town then my old salon just didn't realize how differnt people can be lol.

I'm gonna do 5 minutes of steam far away from the client and maybe start laying off slowly see how it goes. Plus i will use the drink bar idea with a hot towel treatment on the hand and feet. I know that will feel amazing!

oh yeah, they love it. And if you could get the paraffin strips and learn how to maneuver them you can add that as an extra (for a fee or free).  It took my like a month to learn how to manipulate them over hands and feet using the least amount of strips. :-D

Yeah, there are various degrees of quality.  very good idea, ease them out of the steamer :-)

Paraffin strips? Where do I get those? I've never seen them. Also, what do I do with clients who want extractions with nothing to extract? How about black heads on the nose. I can never get them out!

Universal Companies sells them.  Might as well buy the dispenser (they also have it).

I.m OCD so the thought of people sharing the same paraffin bowl sticking their hands and feet is disgusting! Plus the paraffin is not hot enough to kill bacteria.  So a clean way is to dip the strips into the paraffin and wrap arms, feet, elbows with them.  I have managed to use 1 strip per hand and 2 per foot :-) then wrap with liner and put booties/mittens on. Voila! I do this in the beginning so they can stay with the paraffin for as long as possible. While they're masking, I remove the paraffin and massage their hands and feet. THAT, my dear, will turn your client into a faithful follower :-D

HI Monica

Love your ideas. i so agree with dipping hands/feet into paraffin.

I looked on universal companies and didn't find the strips/dispenser. Do you have the actual name of these? What mitts do you use? Do you use some type of hand/feet exfoliate before you apply the paraffin and strips?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm such a newbie and feel quite in secure and in adequate at the moment. thankfully I know that will so pass with more experience.j

Thank you again for all your ideas

Tracy

I don't use scrubs because I provide it for free. If you want to go all out and do a foot/hand treatment (which I offer also), then you would charge for the service. I charge $40 for a hand treatment. I don't offer foot treatment because I am a solo esty and don't want to divert myself from performing skin/body care.

Thank you so much for all this info. I so appreciate it.

What does your hand treatment look like?

I'm also interested in what you do for body care, if you don't mind.

Again, thank you

Hand treatment just like a facial but for the hands:

cleanse, exfoliate (a brightening scrub or peel), brightening serum, hydrating mask (covered with paraffin-dipped strips, plastic and mittens), remove, tone and moisturize.

Body: I do back facials, breast firming treatments, pre and post OP care, Derriere CareTM (my own trademark) and It Works Body wraps.
