Ok I had a friend contact me and ask if we would be interested in hosting a spa party.  We would go to them (for a baby shower) and they are just looking for a little papmering.  Now in the State Of Florida technically it is illegal to do facials mobile, but since it's a friend adn I am not advertising it, do I go ahead and say yes?  What can I really do?  I am assuming that since it's a party, the girls may not want to remove makeup.  I could offer spray tanning?  Maybe a hand and arm massage or decollette?  I also have access to massage therapist so we could probably do mini massages and I also have access to a nail person so they could just get a mini mani (just file and paint).  In my opinion, 15 is a lot and I would likely need to bring at least 2 of each person.  It's a ways away but I just wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone has suggestions for me.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!

Nothing good ever starts with the line "It's illegal, but since it's a friend....."

Sorry, but that's the only feedback I have. What if something goes wrong?

I completely agree, thats why i was thinking more along the lines of tanning, or massages and mini mani's.  Maybe my portion could just be hand and arm massage.  I don't know.  I already told her that doing facial portion was not legal for me so we could come up with something else.....yet when I search spa parties in Florida there are tons of places offering facials mobile...which is frustrating.

Oh I see, I was thinking you meant all those things were illegal for you to do mobile, not just the facial part. Hand and arm massage sounds like it might be a good one. Maybe paraffin bags on hands and/or feet while you do mini massages? Or glitter tattoos? I feel like those stencil glitter things I see at every trade show would be great for parties.

OOHH I did just get those Eco Fin cubes, I could use something like that with heated hand mits.  Thanks Carrie!!  yea just facials.

Nail care is also illegal on a mobile basis in the state of FL (and GA, and MA, and MD, and CA....)

Your insurance is null & void if you perform any illegal services

I know I thought that there wasn't any cutting allowed.  This would be just painting nails.

I will probably just set them up for massages if anything or refer them to a company that does these things and then it's on their license.  There are plenty of them in florida that do.

What the law states is cosmetology services for compensation (not demonstration, which is what is done in department store beauty counters) can only be performed at a licensed establishment (which includes licensed mobile vans).

We get calls all the time from all over the country requesting prohibited services -- both skin care and nail care.

What we tell them is "we are prohibited by law from providing these services. You may find many vendors who will provide these services, but they are illegal."

If they want to go ahead and contract someone illegally, we pass on doing the massage services.

Ok thanks!  I had already told her it was illegal but I would see what could be done.  I originally wanted to be mobile when I started but then found all the laws and it wasn't legal so that stunk.  it di oesn't make sense why massage would be when you are putting your hands all over someones body but law is law.  I will talk to her and let her know.  I tried to get them to come to the spa but they didn't want to do that unfortunately.  What gets me is how are all of these places, advertising these services, and not being shut down.

It has to do with sanitary reasons. They want to know your invasive tools are sanitized/sterlized

Especially a problem for nail care.  Just ask Paula Abdul

Well since its your friends baby shower and 15 girls-you could offer a raffle for a mini service or two- while others are getting massages or nails.
Party Favors- make spa sample bags with1-2 samples, your card/menus shaped as the Stork or something baby related.
Could you have a little beauty bar set up while others are getting massage- you could bring some retail and samples to share and let them test, then also have a few DIY - a lip scrub ,toner or body scrub, bath detox with herbs. Maybe ask your friend if she is willing wanting something like this and figure out cost. Ask each person to bring there own container or get glass ones with lids for $1 at dollar store or Michaels. Maybe could be party favors with your contact Info on sticker or Attached in shape of stork or make them choose name for the scrubs as part of a game you play? something after baby or girl having shower for.

Iif doing gifts for games or table center basket -a spa gift basket you could donate? With gift card for $25.00 or buy one get one and a few samples? Throw in a body brush with instructions, tea light candles and bath balm or salts. Doesn't have to be outrageous or cost you tons of money..
or if she is willing to pay ( then make a few- ask her what she wants) you have access to buy nail polish so could do a nail kit, skin kit and bath/body kit?
I would arrange ahead of time and have her ask on invites to -choose one service and pick ahead of time"-mani, massage, and so on that way you and one or two others can handle on own with the help of another friend? Have consult forms there just to make sure allergies and such to cover self if getting paid
Sheila , Natalie has a good idea. Buy having them use containers to make products. Like.a sugar scrub for the body. By making it a group event it will go with the baby shower, and they get to bond and talk. Also bring some of your spray mist that you make to retail and make up for the funding loss.
