I agree. Check out the PoliticsBeauty.org Maybe you can create an effective group in your state to allow your voices to be heard at legislature.

I don't agree. The board can barely enforce the basic rules we have already. The cream rises to the top. Estheticians that take courses and certifications and adhere to professional standards are successful while those that are subpar fall to the wayside. If the certifications, which are usually offered by product companies, were to be set up as requirements, our state and federal governments would have to absorb regulation of these as well. This is to ensure equal measure is applied to everyone. Call me a realist, but I don't believe the tax payers are interested in paying for further regulation of these standards. It's a nice idea but a misplaced interest. There's a lot of lobbying and interest groups asking for more and more. Their hearts are in the right place but the requests are unreasonable and are the reason why we have a deficit. Everyone thinks these things sound like a good idea without considering whether budgets would be able to support it. Once they've been passed into law we HAVE to pay for it. That's when we start borrowing money. So no, more regulation is not the answer. The answer is that we are responsible for educating clients/potential clients. Clients choose us because we demonstrate competency in our fields. This is the best and least expensive method for setting standards in professional services. Boards should regulate client safety which as far as I can tell, they do. As best as they can. And even just that is expensive. Sorry to be a party pooper.

I can see why you would think this way.  I am not disagreeing with you totally but If I have a degree (which I do) You know that I have Bachelor's and that I have been educated for 4 years on whatever my education is.  I don't thing that the 250 hours in Florida is similar to the 700 I have in Indiana. Can't we just have a basic guideline across the board?  You have to have so many hours etc?  Then, states can just require that instead of whatever they require now.  Not just some random number they picked out of thin air.

Also along this line... When I was a social worker we had certain standards that we had to follow and if we didn't we got fined huge amounts.  What my state does in this field is they CONTRACT out those people who check on you to make sure you are following the law.  The state makes a large profit and so do the contracted companies.  Now, imagine if we did something like this with just following the GUIDLINES and LAWS (They aren't rules, they are indeed LAWS) and fining people who are not following them?  Can you imagine? 

And ENFORCING the laws we actually DO have already on the books!!!

Pennsylvania has the most vague laws. They have been saying they will rule on micro-dermabrasion since 2009. Estheticians have more hours on skincare than the cosmetologists, yet we can not give clients a body wrap nor touch their feet!  We can rub oils and prep or post treatment products for a wax, but don't do a body scrub! I agree that there should be some standards across the board and CEU requirements. Product and equipment changes and improvements make this a necessity!

I received my esthetician schooling in N.J.

I paid 4k and attended advanced master esthetician classes in P.A.

I worked as a laser tech for 6 years in N.C. and was very successful at it. 

Now living in C.A. I am not able to market myself as a master esthetician because there is no such liceanse here(yet) and work as a laser tech. This is very hard to forget all the experience and money spent only to have it takin from me in the state of C.A.  I have yet to find a IPL or laser hair tech as thorough :( I would love to see changes for California.

I'm currently studying for the NCEA 1200 master esthetician cert

(all together confusing with all my moving around and different laws everywhere)
