I have been doing this work for the past 18yrs and incorporated massage 10yrs ago.  I stretch my hands, fingers and anything attached to my body.  What do you so to keep your hands and body from the aches and pains of our industry?  Any idea is WELCOMED! This old dog is willing to learn new tricks! ;)

I feel your pain! Yes the red and Infrared work so well as well as the ice! I also have had to start sleeping with carpal tunnel splints on my hands at night to keep myself from clenching them up in my sleep, (something many people unknowingly do while sleeping). Since doing all of these things  combined with hand stretches between clients, first thing in the morning & before bed, my hands are doing much better! Also if it is within budget chiropractic and massage therapy are also helpful. It's not always in mine but when I am able I do find that I go much longer between cramping and pain. I got my splints from a chiropractor but I'm pretty sure you could find them online as well, they are hard to get used to but once you do, it makes a world of difference!! Best wishes!

I too have been offering relaxing facials with lots of body massage to quiet there mind for 20 years. I started going to Kundalini Yoga 6 months ago after my clients said it would help with Menopause. Anyway what I found was much more than helping my body. This type of Kundalini Lifestyle we do exercises in Meditative state. I met another Esthetician who does facials always has cramped up hands at the end of our energy yoga exercises. The teacher said because we are carrying all of our clients energy thru our hands. We are learning to release this through yoga.  I'm learning to not give too much away of myself these days. We are in this business to help others but we forget to heal ourselves first. Light and love to you.

Hello "old dog"; from one old dog to another... keep them strong, dont over stretch them and dont over do hard work that can make them inflammed. I love to garden but they can become swollen afterward- get use to this sort of thing or stop living? We must deal with it. Asprin if your not allergic can decrease swelling and pain or do your homework and try some herbal treatments for pain. Happy Treatments

Annette!  I can't stop living lol!!  I am going to get a cervical xray tomorrow because my coworker mentioned something might be pinching in my neck that may be causing the aching, numbing and joint pain I am feeling.  This super sucks!  You don't realize how much you need your hands.  I couldn't even open my medication bottle.

I like you am an "old dog" 30+ years doing Massage and Skincare.   I have always looked after my body, regular massage and body work is a must if you are a body worker.

I also receive and provide to my clients KCR (Kinetic Chain Release  www.kineticchainrelease.com) & MFR.  Less taxing on my body as a treatment to give to the client.  Something to look into.

I will!  I was also told by my Rolfer that I should look into offering hot stone massage and cranial sacral.

I have a Bemer electromagnetic bed that I lay on. It changed my life in only 4 days. I had chronic pain and arthritis from a back injury 8 years ago. A piece of bone broke off in my back and damaged my sciatic nerve. ( I think the broken bone came from falling off my horse all the time ) My foot instantly went numb. Anyway, after four days of laying on my Bemer, I got tremendous relief. I thought I would never feel better. Bemer increases your microcirculation by 30%. No other device or medicine can do that. When you increase your blood microcirculation, you can heal yourself. And Bemer has the patent on the technology. Now I have it at the salon and use it on all my clients during a facial. I get my family, neighbors and friends on it. Kids and animals should be using it too. You have heard of people wearing magnetic jewelry for pain? Well this goes way beyond that! NASA is now using Bemer in all their new space suits! I know this is a lot to take in, so feel free to send me questions. My Bemer web site is: www.bemeramerica.com/leanne. Oh, and Bemer has a red LED light that flickers and has the magnetic signal in it also, which is fabulous for ACNE! Yea!

I'll check out the site!  This sounds fascinating!

At the salon the first Bemer session is FREE. Then I charge $30 per session. You lay on the Bemer for just 8 minutes. If they buy a series of 5 I charge $100 which is only $20 a session. Bemer just works! It's so rewarding to see my clients feeling better. People who are tight through the shoulders, usually in one session will feel better. I SHARE the Bemer with everyone I know. If people can't afford it, I give lots of free sessions, because I want people to feel better. I live in a small town, and today I took my Bemer to 3 local businesses because I knew there where people there who needed it. I felt like a stalker, but I have to share it with people who are in pain. Of course I'm also doing it as a business. It is very rewarding to make people feel better.

HI,

I have been a massage therapist for the past 20 years, and am also an esthetician along with some other modalities.

I have a short class that I teach at the local esthetics school called Keep your Body and Mind in Business - Body Mechanics and Meditation.

Here is the short version of that for everyone :)

Body mechanics

~Be aware of how you sit and stand - if you don't have a chair or ball I strongly suggest you get one.  My rolling chair has saved me.

~Get a 1.5 inch diameter dowel from any hardware store for some very unique stretches (I'll do my best to explain without being able to show you)

take the dowel behind your back parallel with the floor. grasp the dowel on each end with the palms of your hands facing forward. Now slowly raise the dowel over your head.  This is the stage that stops most people - so if this is too much then do one hand at a time.  Do this daily, 5-6 times!

Meditation

Sit, close your eyes, visualize the top of your head down your spine releasing.  Take a deep breath down in to your abdomen and low back.  Now visualize your shoulders releasing with that release travelling down your arms in to your hands.  Feel that tension releasing, add a couple of light movements/stretches while your are releasing this tension.

5 mins a day

Let me know if you have further questions too :)

I love the idea of LED too

Colleen

It sounds like you need to add a new tools to replace your fingers. I used to do that too and after 10 years gave it up and only offered partial massage to relieve immediate tension. I introduced a magnetic massage (Nikken.com) with the mag roller that did a great job all over the body. I used the roller to relieve all of the tension and the clients felt more relaxed because there was no pressure on the trigger points. Nikken magnets are patented and very good on stimulating the circulation and relieving the tension on contact. Try it and let me know how it goes.

Your right! I do need to replace my fingers with something else.  I will check out the website. Thank you!
