My book is bare! Help! (Connecting with local businesses)

I just started renting a room in a medical office.  The building doesn't allow banners or any form of soliciting material.  Is it appropriate to go door to door in the building as well as the local area?  Introducing myself and giving out gift cards?  Bakery cookies or something?

I noticed a cute hair salon that doesn't have an esthetician and would love to connect with them.  It's a little scary for me because I have long salt & pepper hair, it happens to look edgy and I feel celebrates healthy aging, not everyone should go grey but it works for me.  I'm in my 50's; from the website, the salon looks young. I was thinking I could have the owner trim it and give it a conditioning treatment and pick his brain a bit.  Is this the best approach?  Has anyone had success they can share some tips?

Hair salons are notorious for having attitude so walking in cold doesn't excite me.

Thanks for any advice!
