Hi everyone!  Wanted to get thoughts on toners.  I used a line that didn't have toners right out of school, as they said if the cleanser is pH balanced, you don't need a harsh toner to bring skin's pH back to normal.  The line I use now has toners, but they are more hydrating and to promote product penetration and are not harsh.   I just saw something from an OTC skin care company on Facebook about their new toner, which is Witch Hazel to 'tighten pores'.  Is this good for the skin?  I really want to educate people on some of these claims, but want to know the facts.  Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I think that most lines are calling them "skin conditioners" and "hydrating mists" rather than toners.

If someone was using a cleanser that was more base than acid, it would make sense to have the toner be slightly acidic to bring back up to proper pH.

Witch Hazel is added to many toners/conditioners because it has a low (acidic) pH.

When my daughter was a teenager and had oily skin she loved using the Thayers witch hazel - it really dried her up!  But used all by itself? Most OTC witch hazels contain quite a bit of alcohol too. Meh....we can do better I think...

There are other beneficial ingredients that we see in today's toners....antioxidants, peptides, hyaluronic acid, etc.  Plus the moisture content helps with application and absorption of the serums or moisturizer applied after - exactly as you have said.

Are people still saying "It tightens your pores?"    Really?...that is so 1970's!!

Thanks Cindy!  Yes, this company posted exactly that, it tightens pores.

I completely agree with Cindy. I think there is still a market for toners because our older gals are used to using them with their old product lines when everyone needed a toner to bring the pH back to balance... and it was an "essential step in their regimen". Product manufacturers still sell them/market them because that's what clients are used to, and that's what they think they need!

Acne clients are a different story, just like Cindy said. They like to dry up the oil, which is exactly what the alcohol based toners can do. Which in turn signals the body to make more oil which then contributes to more acne! I also think that it's a psychological thing for acne clients because they feel squeaky clean. We've got to teach them to understand the function of the acid mantle and the oil production cycle.

There is something to be said about witch hazel though. I like it for its antiseptic/antibacterial properties- and use it after waxing. I buy the stuff at Target/CVS that sells for a few dollars, and it works great. If anyone uses anything better or thinks I should try something different, I'm all ears! Definitely up for trying anything! :) Have a great day Jodi and Cindy!

Honestly, I love my toner just for the simple fact of using it when I get out of the shower because I feel like (mentally of course) it gives me a nice fresh face to start adding serums or moisturizers to.  According to The Wax Queen the skin will naturally restore it's pH at one of her educational classes??  Not sure about that, but it was an interesting thought.  I like toner as a personal preference.

I have also read that the skin naturally restores its pH after a period of time. That's the whole purpose of the acid mantle.

I totally get the whole mental thing- and I think it just really boils down to preference. :)

and it feels refreshing :) forgot to add that in.  LOL

I use Skin Script line and their toner rocks. My best selling item......by far.....i LOVE it!!!!

Hello,

I would like to recommend you Maxatone toner it is dermatologist recommended and it really help you for removing skin-dulling impurities without harsh or drying ingredients. And also help you to protects your skin from free radicals and inhibits environmental damage with its antioxidant action

Toners are great for a second step in cleansing too. Especially if used on a cotton. If any cleanser was left over then that cotton with toner would help to remove the excess cleanser and balance the skins pH at the same time.
