Question for those recently hired!

Hello All!

My question in directed to all of you who were hired into the esthetics field within the past couple of years. What do you feel gave you the edge over other candidates, and what would your advice be to estheticians just entering the work force?

My story - I was hired at a massage spa while in school for Esthetics. I have been working as a Receptionist and thankfully my boss has wanted to expand since I was hired so I've been in able to help develop the spa's up coming Esthetic Services! :) My 'edge' I guess you could call it was my interest and passion for more natural approaches to health and skin care (the spa is a wellness orientated day spa) Also I'm certified to preform Aromatherapy Services so that gave me a little edge being the spa works with a lot of essential oils :)

Any advice I'd give would be to just be passionate about the direction you want to go with your work.. whether it be a wellness spa, medical spa, etc..

The key is to not only have excellent technique and customer care skills, you need to be able to sell products. A successful spa gets 30% to 40% of it's income from product sales. If you can walk in and show them that you understand how to sell products, you will have a very competitive advantage.

I agree with you, Kris, that the ability to sell is critical. Many employers require their therapists sell a certain percentage of retail, and if you aren't able to meet that percentage, you might not keep your job! One recent skin care graduate told me that when she started job-hunting at spas, she included in her resume proof that she had consistently won the monthly contest her school held for students who sold the most retail to clinic clients. She was convinced that this landed her a job at one of the nicest spas in town who had a reputation for never hiring new grads. So, it can definitely give you an edge.
