Hi everyone!  This is my 3rd summer in skin care, and it always seems people stop coming around June, and pick up again after Labor Day.  Some people do spend summers away, so that I understand, but does anyone have any theories why it is this way and any ideas of what we can do to counteract it?  As long as people continue to use sunscreen, it's safe to get skin treatments all summer long.  I ask for 2 reasons...1.  I don't like not making money all summer long, and 2.  When people come back, their skin is back where we started and we have to start over.  Do other estheticians experience this lull?  I'm in PA if that matters.

Being in Florida we always drop off the sames times.  I have found it is due to summer vacations and limited monies with family's that have children i.e. summer camp, summer school, child care, etc

This is my first summer as an esthetician and I have seen it dropping since June. I too am assuming that it's because people are gone on vacation, or just busy with summer activities especially with the kids being out of school. Not as much free time. I have also been getting a lot of people calling to cancel or reschedule because they're going out of town, going to the lake, etc.  I kind of am enjoying it because it is giving me to do fun summer things too, but I don't like not making as much money.

This is my first summer as an esthy also. No really digging the empty pockets, but enjoying the extra time with my kids. So far, this has been my slowest week and the coming weeks don't look very promising according to the appt. schedule :/  I am trying to be productive and make use of my extra time to research new skin care lines and really trying to educate  myself on OTC products that my clients always ask about so that I atleast have something to respond to.

I am in PA as well, and find that winter time seems to be a busier time for skincare (dry skin).  However, my bikini & brazilian clients as well as bridal makeup go crazy in the summer!  Have you added these services to your menu?  They might help you get through that summer.

We do waxing and I've had a few, and I'm not a makeup artist, so I wouldn't do Bridal makeup. I just wondered if this was a normal trend all over the country.  Thanks!

When it's slow, what are some ideas to get people in?  I would prefer NOT to wax all summer if I can help it.  I have been offering a free upgrade for people who book and mention seeing the promotion on Facebook, so far, no takers.  I'm not sure what else to do to get people to keep up their skin care over the summer.  

It's the nature of the business...that's why I started doing eyelash extensions because they HAVE to come back for it. If you don't want to do extensions, than....

1.build facials around summer problems. burnt skin, hyperpigmentation, dehydration, clogged from oil/sweat. post summer concerns

2.sell "summer only" facial packages..it's prepaid and make sure to add a free sunblock or make it irresistible...a little money is better than no money!

3. sell "summer only" waxing prepaid packages. be the best in brazilians and bikini waxing. use the best in strip and stripless wax

4. go and get customers in that down time. dont sit...pass out flyers, do an on-site event at another business, work with a bathing suit store

As an LMT for 13  years, esty lic. since Aug, yes summer has always been slow. This is the best summer I've had in three years, still slow but not anywhere near where it was for the past 3. I still don't have much of a client base for facials, I am doing more waxing, about 75% is massage. The only summers I was busy was while summer emp. of destination spa. Vacations, children, grandchildren. I just had a lady last week for massage and said after summer she wanted to get back into regular facials, but for the summer would be spending all her time in the water and saw no need!

Afraid it goes with the territory at least in this area and the area I livied in before.

I am in PA also, and experience the summer slow down every year. Generally we have families that go away or to the shore for extended times. My stay at home moms who would normally come in during the day have a harder time making time for themselves with the kids at home during the summer. And I see some with less disposable income as Shannon mentioned.

I have tried the sunburn/dehydration specials and that doesn't see to drum up much business. My waxing business is pretty sporadic but doesn't seem to pick up OR decrease during the summer.

Next month I am going to have a tropical/island getaway theme and see how that goes.

After the flurry of back to school stuff everyone starts coming back by the middle of September.

I have scheduled myself off a few days already during this summer to take a couple of classes.

Some successful specials we have done include a "staycation" spa package that has a tropical or beachy flair - Coconut Massages, Grapeseed Papaya Facials - Just fluff stuff usually that the clients just want to relax to.  We showcase it as an alternative to going away somewhere.  People really liked it!  I still have some clients who ask for the "Tropical Paradise" facial.  Friend me Cindy!

Our business always slows down in the summer too (Indiana). I say its better to just go with it and take care of other business aspects and enjoy the free time. Nail down your marketing plan for the entire year, take classes, etc. and increase your hours in the fall when you're likely to be busiest. We're usually slow here July - September. We offer spray tanning as well, which is why I think we stay busy through the beginning of July.

And here we are a year later!  I'm busier so far than this time last year with facials and I've become much more proficient at waxing and even added Brazillian to my menu, so hopefully that will help keep me busy!  I'm pushing waxing specials now hoping that will draw people in!  How's everyone else doing so far this summer?
