Trimming before waxing

I am starting to build my waxing services, and am wondering what my fellow estys are doing for trimming before bikini/Brazilian waxing services. I have tried trimming with sheers and comb. I also just went to a class with the wax chic in Chicago where she said she doesn't trim, just parts the hair in a certain direction. I find that trimming with sheers can make the client uncomfortable. I had a bikini wax on Saturday and tried the hair parting technique and had little success, i know that will take practice. I am hesitant to tell the client to trim themselves before the treatment because they will usually trim too short, due to past experiences. Please feel free to make recommendations :) Also since I am just starting to build up my waxing services, most of my clients have never been waxed before or only do before a vacation or special event so they have LONG hair.

Are you using hard or soft wax? I do mostly full brazilians all day, and only use hard wax. If a client is too long I usually trim with a small pair of cuticle scissors. I mostly focus on the middle so that I don't accidentally grab hairs from the side I'm not applying wax to, and I definitely trim the top center where the hair is usually the thickest and most painful to remove.

Use a comb and scissor on the side of the comb AWAY from the skin.  Or, I use a pair of clippers. with a guard.

I have a pair of clippers but to be honest I have never used them.  I'd be very uncomfortable.  I have trimmed long hairs once or twice before waxing with brow scissors, but I'd rather just work in tiny sections and wax the hair at full length.  As long as I'm applying in the right direction and in very small sections, I haven't seen breakage.
