6 Awesome Tips for Fast Post-Operative Recovery

Any surgery has a post-operative recovery period. The duration of your recovery will depend on the type of surgery. While some people recover for a few months, another may only need two weeks to heal. However, regardless of the surgery type, every person needs proper self-care. It is an essential part of recovery after any type of surgery. Poor self-care may cause serious complications and even health problems.

Here are six simple but effective tips that may help you improve your recovery and get back to normal life faster. 

1. Take time off work

Many people try to get back to work straight from the hospital bed but it is crucial to get enough rest after the surgery. Your health is more important than work. Most likely after surgery, you will not be able to make the best business decisions anyway. So take a break for a while. In addition,  work may cause stress that also negatively affects recovery and hinders the healing processes in the body. 

If your doctor told you to take 3 weeks of medical leave, then your body needs this time to recover. Proper rest after the surgery is the best way to avoid returning to the hospital bad. 

2. Take care of your incision 

It is crucial to take care of your incisions and check it several times a day. This may not be your favorite activity but you need to notice any abnormalities in a timely manner. You can use a mirror to take a look at your incisions if it is in a hard-to-reach place. 

Your doctor will prescribe you a special antibacterial and healing ointments. Apply them regularly and wash your hands before and after. This may help you prevent infections and the suppuration of the wound. It is important to clean the incisions properly, according to doctor’s recommendations. 

3. Maintain proper hydration

Most people experience digestive problems like nausea, vomiting, and constipation after surgery. For this reason, they you may not feel like eating or drinking after having surgery. However, it very important to eat a healthy diet and maintain proper hydration after surgery. Dehydration slows down the healing process in your body and delays the recovery. 

Apart from simple clear water, you may drink water flavored with lemon juice or lukewarm herbal tea without sugar. 

4. Move

It is important to move after surgery to prevent serious complications like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pneumonia. Take a short walk every hour or two to reduce the risk of amyotrophy and muscle weakness. Getting enough movement after surgery is also a good way to prevent constipation that is a common problem caused by antibiotics and anesthesia. 

Walking is a good way to return to your previous physical activity. You may also ask your doctor about special post-operative physical therapy. Keep in mind, that it is important to consult your doctor before starting your walks or doing sports. 

5. Quit smoking

Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor that interferes with normal blood flow. It reduces the healing properties of the body and may delay your recovery. Cigarettes also depress the immune system function. This increases the risk of infections and inflammation in the surgery site. 

It is recommended to quit smoking for at least 6 weeks before surgery and after to reduce the risk of complications. You also need to stop using other nicotine-containing products.

6. Eat healthy foods

It is very important to eat a healthy diet during the recovery period. This way  you provide your body with nutrients and vitamins your organism needs to heal properly. A healthy diet can minimize the risk of common complications as constipation and nausea. Keep in mind that it will be hard for your body to heal if it doesn’t have enough fuel to get better.
