I have done lots of research on different companies. the problem is, unless you know ingredients like the back of your hand, its hard to tell.
is their a company that tests and rates professional lines? if not , how do we tell?

That makes sense, yes. When I started (when I chose the line, which I now do not), I chose the line I felt delivered the best results for what I wanted to accomplish. I didn't know my niche yet, as I had no clients. But it worked, the line was best for aging and that's who I attracted. I'm not much of a business person, that's why I'm better leaving the ownership up to someone else. :)
Hi Jodi, so once you determine what kind of clients will come (anti aging)..then you would know what product to invest in. Sooo what product did you start out with and why??? Thanks
I started with Circadia, as IMO it's one of the best lines out there for anti-aging. I personally use it on my own skin. For the past 3 years, however, I haven't had the option of choosing my product line, so I've been using Dermalogica and have become highly educated on it and I like some of their products as well. I just ordered Skin Scripts Fall facial enzyme and mask to spice things up for my clients and I'm anxious to try those to see what results I get. But hands down, if I chose the line it would be Circadia for anti-aging. For acne, Face Reality. I get great results with that.
thank you, with circadia what did you start with???
Denise, I think the best thing to do is look at lines and ask questions.
What do the offer as far as education..local, webinar, trade shows, etc. Do they charge for education?
What is their price point on products, can you afford them? Can clients afford them?
WHat is their average shipping cost and how long will it take to get products?
Do they offer samples? Do you have to buy them, can you buy them, or do you have to spend x amount to even get them? Do they sample the whole line?
What are other people saying about the company? Do a search on the forum? Do a search for professional skin care and then just check out each line, look at their websites, do they blog, what type of information are they giving. Check out their facebook page and see what people are saying.
Start contacting a few and just see what their customer service is like. Do they respond to an email immediately, are they willing to send you samples to check out the line. How does it smell, feel, etc.
Number one is you have to beleive in the product line you are using...if not, how can you sell it. I firmly beleive you should personally be using what you sell.
A lot of times when a company has a large min order, you can likely talk to them and tell them you are a small business and will they be willing to work with you. Worse they can say is no. I was looking into Rhonda Allison at one time and their min was around $1500 but she was willing to let me place a small sample order and then work my way up to the $1500 min order. SOmew companies won't give you the time of day until you have hit the min and some require you to purchase x amount each month.
Lot's of things to think about.
omg yes a lot of info and research thank You, for your time. So many skincare lines out there you just don't know where to start and its so costly. I will be starting a new place, and don't know what to get. I bought emmience, great smelling products, but no results. Bought Aveda also no results. I will keep trying. Thanks Again
That's great advice Sheila! There is no right or wrong answer, so many great lines and people love different things about them.
As far as your question on Circadia, Denise, I started with Lipid Replacing cleanser, Vitamin Veil Cleanser, Chocolate Enzyme, both masks they offer (I prefer masks of other lines honestly), the daily SPF moisturizer, Night Repair, Vitamin C Serum. I also had a 20% lactic acid peel, but never used it.
Circadia does not have any minimum order. Dermalogica I think may have large minimums. I just ordered some Skin Scripts to use and they also have no minimum order.
I don't know about other lines, but Sheila is right, find your niche, talk to others, check out lines, their claims, their ingredients, etc. Go to shows and talk to them all in one place. It can be overwhelming, but so worth it! Good luck!
Thank You Will do.
Circadia has awesome education at most of the shows as well!! Michael is amazing and passionate..and will sometimes talk over your head but their education is mostly non product specific. Skin scripts I feel is the same way. They educate you on skin care and may mention their products briefly.
Also another thing I thought about last night...definitely find out if the line has protocols. If you can get your hands on any of the PCA training manuals they are FILLED with useful skin care information.
This link was posted and I just read it and its very good: http://www.skininc.com/skinscience/physiology/171837731.html?page=1
Elaine Linker, the author, really makes a very simple outline to a complicated area of skin care. The only thing she did not touch on is how the pH of the skin is measured and what measures it. But besides that, very good article.
I tried looking for the poster of that link but I could not find. Thank you for posting that, her words were simple and easy to understand. Excellent stuff...
