Hi all,  this is my first post.  So glad to reconnect with my fellow beauty makers.  I just got a call from my friend who is desperate to get her niece in to see me.  She is on Accutane and is about 3 months in.  I haven't seen her yet but I am told she is beyond dry and VERY broken out.  I have the clarifying mask from PCA I could use on her for the severe breakout, but I'm afraid she might be too dry for that.  I also have the Detox from PCA.  Should I use that and then a calming mask and LOTS of humectants?  Any ideas?  I took Accutane and I remember how incredibly dry I was and how broken out before the stuff started to really work.  She is a high schooler and is devastated by her skin.  Help me help her please.

Hi Laura I have a young man who has been off Accutane for a few months now . He is feeling dry and has no home care . I have not work with anyone on Accutane I do know NO EXfoliantion , Waxing , peels microderm ect. Is it still safe for hydrating facial gentle calming soothing products?

Yes, I would say so.

Hi Laura,

Thanks for all the helpful information here and on the LinkedIn Acne Specialists group.  I work almost exclusively with PCA products.  Here is the information on Accutane users and the options for peels on these clients.  This information is on PCA's Patient Profile Form that they fill out.

"Are you currently using Accutane Yes____ No___ If so, for how long?______________(It is OK to apply ONE layer of

Ultra Peel® I, Sensi Peel®, Ultra Peel® II, Esthetique Peel or Oxy Trio to skin that has been treated with Accutane®.)".

I think I will wait a month as you advise just to be on the safe side.

Thanks again

Denise

@Katrina - we don't do treatments or products on anyone who's on Accutane. They have to be off Accutane for at LEAST a month before we will touch them.

Speaking of Accutane, just got this in my Google alerts -

Most physicians do not want any skin peeling for a least 6 months after Accutane is discontinued.  This RX has many dermal effects that we are not seeing at the epidermal level.  No actives should be used, it will only aggravate the situation.  A silicone product will soothe and act on a diminished lipid barrier. That would be the most I would ever do on a client being treated with Accutane.  Hope that's helpful!
The focus of her treatment needs to be healing and extremely gentle with little manipulation.  Essential oils infused in a cloth baby diaper would be best.  Suggested oils would be Lavender, chamomile, myrrh, and frankincense.  Use in small amounts in cool water.  These oils are incredibly healing especially for dry, cracked skin.  It may not take it completely away but a lot more comfortable.  Gentle manual facial lymphatic drainage would also help with healing not only the redness but really effect break outs.  When not so active, rosacea products will continue healing process.

Rita,

Just some suggestions for her. Have her try taking a hyaluronic acid supplement (orally) for joint lubrication. It will also benefit her skin. Her skin is purging and unfortunately all of the things we want to do for her, are going to make her dryness and irritation worse. Oxygen treatments will help. Look for a vitamin enriched serum or very light oil for her to use - even during the day. It takes some getting used to but it will be worth it in the end. I like Sanitas Vita-Rich Serum. I use it at night with a very small amount of shea butter. It feels very soothing.

It has been 18 years since I was on accutane. I loved my results but I still have chronically dry eyes and lips. When all else fails or I'm really broke I go the the fridge and pantry and make a mask of 2 tablespoons of sour cream, and 1 tablespoon of local honey. Mix it together apply to face and leave on for at least 20 minutes...don't sleep in this one (from the been there done that file, lol).

I know it's been said but I'd like to add my voice to the consensus that you should not even be considering using any kind of peels or retinols on her. She needs clearance from her doctor for any kind of treatment from you. This protects you. Because Accutane thins the skin and reduces oil so dramatically (not to mention what it does to your insides)', the skin barrier is substantially reduced. So anything you put on her, benign or not, could have an unprecedented reaction in her skin. Things she might not have ever reacted to before are intensified by the fact that they enter the skin more easily and quickly. And if something did happen, you could be accused of being negligent.

Because of the heightened risk, it's not worth it when she's already receiving treatment.

If the doctor does clear her for treatment I recommend jojoba oils mixed with essential oils appropriate for her skin. Perhaps rebalance and hydrating mask but absolutely nothing in regards to oily/problem cleanser, smoothing toner, and most of the treatment serums (anti-redness maybe). No lactics, glycolic, salicylic, Retinol, or peels.

I would leave out the essential oils.. some can be very irritating.

Perhaps. I would feel comfortable with one drop of ylang ylang to control sebum and normalize.

You don't think so?

I would look up irritancy possibility for any kind of essential oil if I elected to use them.

Yes of course. :)
