Hey everyonve! I'm a new Esti and I have a friend/client that has systemic Lupus that has hyperpigmentation issues she would like my help with.  Is there anything I should be aware of before introducing her to chemical peels??? Please enlighten me!!!

Wow - anytime you have a client with an auto-immune disorder there can be problems.

One of my massage clients with lupus developed a propensity to keloid scarring. And it was pretty bad.

I don't know if that is common with lupus or not.

Best course would be to have client discuss with her primary care physician.

I would stick to milder exfoliation with topical homecare and just make it a longer course of treatment.

Cimberly;

I would have her check with her doctor FIRST to make sure that her skin can tolerate any kind of peel. If the doc approves have the client get it in written form for you to keep in her file.  Hope this helps.

Cimberly you are an intelligent professional esthetician, i am so glad you took the time to ask! Lupus is a very challenging disorder when addressing skin treatments. Chemical peeling is not out of the question but as others have replied you need her to make sure she is medically cleared for all services. If you get the go ahead i would use enzymes first, then move into a gentle lactic acid peel. Always make sure the skin is ready to take a peel by doing at least 1 good hydrating facial and implementing good home care. Good luck!

I would definitely take the less is more approach.  I would suggest investigating low-grade alpha/beta solution.  There are a couple of companies out there that offer such products.  Your friend/client is fortunate to have someone as professional and conscientious on the case.  Good luck!
