With summer right around the corner I'm getting a lot of requests for body waxing, i.e., back, chest, legs, arms, etc. I use strip wax for larger areas and hard wax for face. I feel like it's taking me FOREVER! And I go thru the wax and sticks like crazy on ONE person. I'm not a seasoned waxer and so I'm wondering if anyone can offer some tips. Clients have recommended that I get those roll-on wax applicators....any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Example: female client today came in at 2:45 for full arm, under arm, and 3/4 leg. I finished at 4:45. That's too long right?

Roll on wax applicators are good for somebody like yourself that isn't a seasoned waxer.  We could go into a whole other topic on the roller heads and how to keep them clean for each client etc (as some states are changing their policies on the use of roller waxing)  So i won't go off on a tangent here.

Yes, taking 2 hours is too long and you would earn much more if you waxed in a shorter time frame etc.  Using the roller wax would speed up the process, most definitely.  You mentioned that you go through a lot of sticks (Which is good as you are obviously not double dipping!)  Keeping it clean is the way to go!    Using a roller wax you can apply the wax to the whole front of the shins and speed wax that way, rather than doing a strip, removing it, doing another strip etc....   Once you pick up speed and technique you will find your speed will also pick up when you start using the sticks again.

When using soft wax with the sticks make sure your stick is at a 90 degree angle so the wax drips onto the skin in a thin application.  As you drag the stick down the hair the wax should be thinly applied.  This is to take as much pressure off the skin as possible and also of course saves you money, the less you use.  More is not better.

If their skin is a bit dry, use a tiny, tiny bit of oil.  Apply it to the skin (make sure you dab off any excess from the skin so it is not too oily) this helps with the application of soft wax also.  Helps it glide onto the body more and protects the skin from any damage that wax can (but shouldn't) cause.

Hope some of this helps!  I am getting tired now and ready for bed...so i hope i have helped explain as much as my mushed brain will allow right now!  Claire

Hi Claire,

THANK YOU so much for all your advice. One thing I didn't think about with roll-on is the sanitation! I watch some YouTube videos from some pros (Eva Esthetics, etc.) and learned a LOT about what I'm doing wrong. I'm using way too much wax and not applying it correctly and I was only doing strip by strip instead of large areas of wax application and then removing it with the strips. I think I'm gonna stick with the 'stick' :) and not move to the roll-on. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE that's what I need. Thanks again you were very helpful, mushy brain and all ;)

No problem!  I am going to be doing a DVD in the summer to go with my books on waxing.  So it displays very simply how to apply etc....keep checking in!  :)   Keep practicing on anybody willing and get your speed up.  It really is a good way to make money and of course clients love to be hair free! :)

Lori - it just takes time and finding the right wax for you & the client. I use Satin Smooth's line since you can customize the wax to the client and the application. I tend to use honey alot, just because it goes on quickly and  I seem to have more control with it as a newbie. Take lots of classes. I have taken 6 classes and get better with everyone. I have also contimplated the roll on, but so far just sticking with canned wax. Hang in there, it will get better and you will be waxing faster in no time. Learning how to properly load your stick is a huge time saver. Full cans of wax makes it easier. When a can gets down to half full, I simply put it aside and grab a new one. When it's gets half full, i just empty it into the other one. Same wax of course! But that way you never loading a stick with less than a half can of wax. Once it gets down past half, you have to make to many trips back and forth. Hope all that makes sense. I also wax the arms at an angle. Start from the inner arm diagonal across to the outter. 3 pulls and your done, next section. Happy Waxing! JN

Thanks John! I do know that I need to get some classes under my belt. Any suggestions of ones you liked? Not sure where you are, I'm in Northern California.

Stephanie at smooth skin supply in Sacramento is an educator!  Think she has a group on here also.  If you need deets give me a shout and i will send you her link.

Waxing is my biggest anxiety!! I definitely need more classes and training being so new. DVDs are great but hands on is the way to go. Maybe you could practice on a few friends or yourself. I unfortunately was lasered so that idea is kinda out the window and one pull on a back wax with the boyfriend and he said I love you but I'm never letting you do that again. Lol

I just started using the satin smooth self-heating roll-ons & LOVE it. It has cut my time in half, plus my cost!! I was worried about head sanitation but they came out with a machine to cleanse the heads and I wash them in hot/water then throw them in my barbicide. The self-heating roll-on is $40, the cleaning head is $30 I think. One full leg wax & I had the cost covered.

1 large cartridge does a half leg wax so I purchased two roll-ons because it takes 1&1/2 cartridges to do a full leg wax. I can do a brazilian and half a leg wax in under an hour!! Totally recommend it and clients love it!!!

Hey Lori,

Kudos to you for not double-dipping!  Makes me very happy to hear that :)  The speed waxing technique Claire mentioned is the way to go with larger body parts (any body part really).  Apply as much wax as  you can, then remove all at once...repeat.  A full leg should take 30-40 minutes, a full back 15-20 minutes, a full chest 15-20 minutes, underarms 5 minutes or less, full arm 15-20 (depending on the hairyness of the individual).

Good luck
