Had a client that had microdermabrasion about 10 days ago call and say she got some breakouts on her face and some white milia.  She only had one close to her eye and wondered if that was from her treatment?  She had also been up to the mountains and said she had not been drinking water etc.

I didn't really think it was from that but I am not positive so thought I would ask  what you all thought!

Any ideas or info I can share with her?

Thanks!

Angela - it's hard to guess at what might have happened. I don't think that microdermabrasion on it's own could cause that reaction.

It is possible that it was just her home care, especially if she is using OTC stuff that she hasn't gone over with you. Milia....makes me think she was not using her hydrators (hyaluronic acid etc), and possibly using a moisturizer that was comedogenic or occlusive or just plain wrong for her skin. You might want to do a home care makeover for her and make sure she is telling you everything she is using

I try to have client be on a post-treatment regimen for a few days before going back to their regular routine.

I go back and forth on this one - after a peel or microdermabrasion it seems like a great opportunity to go for corrective serums. Yet, every so often I see someone whose skin is just too reactive so we have to baby it for a bit before getting back into serums/actives.

that is what i was thinking possibly she needs some serums.  She is using OTC and hasn't made the switch yet but I am still working on her! :)

Thanks for the input!  She said she has had micro but its been awhile ago and never had milia before...I am thinking she is just needing more hydrating now (she is older and hadn't had it in about 4 years).

what line do you use? could your products be comedogenic?

It makes a lot of sense that your client may break out from that.  Its extreme exfoliation and the skin will purge if there is anything that needs to be cleared from the pores.  I would suggest using a sensitive cleanser to calm the skin and a hydrating moisturizer.  Also if she doesn't use a toner regularly it will not get better.  Hope this helps <3

i remember learning in school that mechanical exfoliation can cause milia/p>

also, i was wondering how long u were treating client before micro?  if i client has active pustuals or papulas, micro shouldnt be done. it spreads the bacteria. how did u prep skin prior, and what products did u use after?

alot of things could have caused this... not prepping skin well, client not following home care, poorly steralized equitpment, client hygene...

hard to know why without morecdetails...
