Any ideas/advice on building a clientele? I do airbrush tanning out of my home and need to get more clients in the door! Once they try Endless Glow, they're hooked! I've tried doing specials, but it just seems to bring in the "cheap" clients (that's horrible to say!)

That is not horrible to say.  You recognize that a certain demographic is more likely to continue to patronize your business at full price.  Nothing horrible about it.  Never feel bad about valuing your services!

I also do spray tanning. One thing you can do is stop by local dance studios in town and give them your information. Maybe even give one of the instructors a free tan to see your work. The dancers love to get tanned before events. Maybe offer a group rate. Also pay attention to people you know on facebook and if someone you know is getting married offer her a free tan if she signs her bridesmaids up with you. Once you can get a couple parties under your belt if your good, the word of mouth will do all of your advertising for you! Good luck!!

Also don't be afraid to make friends with your local salons and spas (the ones that don't offer spray tan, obviously). I have brochures and business cards at a salon down the street, and have gotten quite a few clients from that

Very true!  I have no plans of ever offering spray tanning, but the two makeup artists on the block who do sure benefit from the fact that I'm not interested!

Also, don't forget strippers and the gay community!  With strippers anyway there is the potential for being paid in cash...  just saying :)

Yes!  Strippers!  There's a client base that will return, and WILL have money.  Also, they will probably make your day ^_^

I hate discounting. But I AM a proponent of free services. Get the loyalty punch cards on the back of your business cards and do buy 4 get one free or buy 9 get the tenth free. And then stick to your guns. Services like ours are very dependent on perception. If we discount too much then people come to expect a low price because of groupons etc etc. Then it becomes hard to change that perception or it doesn't attract the right kind of clientele that is long lasting. So it becomes a waste. Don't discount, but do reward. Rewarding loyalty tells your clients that they are valued and you appreciate them valuing you. Then sit back and be patient. Rome was not built overnight but if you remain dedicated and passionate about your craft, you perfect it and commit to it, the clients will come. The ones that you want are picky and discerning and are willing to pay the price for quality results. Hold out for those and do everything you can to keep them coming back. So many in this business think they can just invest in the product and all the clients and money will roll in on its own, what a fun way to earn a living etc etc. What most don't realize is that the fun jobs are more competitive and require more commitment to get to the top and stay there. It's hard work. Harder than the boring jobs for sure.

This is a really good point about discounting.  I have seen more than one business go under because they discounted too frequently.  As Samantha says, rewards are much better.  Also, beware of viewing your services as being worth less because you are offering them from your home.  Instead, make sure that the entire client experience, from rolling up in your driveway to walking into your treatment area (possibly through any living areas) is serene, tranquil, and beautiful...  you aren't skimping on a retail location, rather you are providing a peaceful retreat from the hectic retail scene.  Hence your menu price for your services should be at least as much as your competitors in retail settings, and possibly more depending on what else your clients enjoy as compared with going to your competition.  I think aiming to be in the upper-middle range for your city or town is a good idea - if for no other reason than it gives you a financial cushion to do things like reward services or business building activities without stressing about uncompensated hours.

Have you considered trying some kind of a rewards program? If your clients come in X number of times they get a free service or discount. If they bring a friend or make a recommendation and it gets you a sale they get a free service or discount.
