Yes Leiloni! Seasonal specials are a great way to get them in the door. Unfortunately when you are first starting you have to put in a great amount of time. And, you have to do it the old fashioned way by HUSTLING! Literally going around, talking to people, handing out your card, offering consultations, and even flyers on doors! Not fun, but think of it like planting the seeds that will soon begin to grow. Find places where your ideal client would hang out. Put your cards/flyers in female gyms, local coffee shops, college/university, and corporate office buildings with tons of workers. All it takes is one or two people from any one place and they will spread the word for you! Also consider looking in the real estate section of your paper. The addresses of new homeowners are listed and you can direct mail them with a "welcome to the neighborhood" special. Its free and I have got dozens of clients this way. It takes soooo much time to build a book. If you are good at what you do and patient, your business will only keep getting better and better.
I love your advice lisa! It sounds doable and most of all-- affordable! I'm always afraid to leave business cards or postcards around the areas you mentioned (gyms, colleges, coffee shops etc) for fear they just go right in the trash. I approached Starbucks in my area and they told me they only post community or non-profit information. I created a great 5x7" postcard that promotes my specializations but I don't know where to go with them. Any suggestions?
While many of the cards and flyers WILL end up in the trash, just getting one person out of it is a success. They say that for every 100 marketing materials you send out 1 or 2 people responding is the norm. Sounds pointless, but this is the way it goes. Honestly consider putting your flyers on the door handles of houses in the higher-end neighborhood near where your studio is. I did this to an apartment complex I worked near and got lots of folks out of it. Don't fuss with mailboxes, or car windshields as that is illegal and annoying. But most people at least glance at flyers on the front porch. Make them look beautiful, not too cheap with quality paper. Great opprotunity to promote a seasonal facial. The best way to get "in" to a corporate office is if you have any friends/family that can sort of be your little cheerleader and bring marketing materials into the office. TONS of creative ways of drumming up business. I'm pretty old school and find that the person to person hustle is still leaps and bounds better than a FB post or something. It works if you work it, girl!
Thanks Lisa-- I'm going to give it a shot. What you're saying makes sense. I spent $250 on direct mail and didn't get one single response so I'm not doing that again. What do you think of those signs politicians and realtors use? They seem a little obnoxious but could be creatively used.
yes direct mail is a waste of money. try the new homeowner route, as it is very effective. make up a "welcome to the neighborhood" postcard. they are new to the area and will be looking for new service technicians/hair stylist ect. be the first to entice them. offer a complimentary brow wax to get them in the door and meet you and go from there. NOBODY can pass up a free brow wax haha!! Do keep in mind the zip codes you are soliciting. Always a good idea to go where the money is. As far as the signs your talking about....i;m picturing the lawn signs? But yes, whatever you can do to get your name out there. the average person needs to be reminded about something a dozen times to remember it. If you don't get responses, save the addresses and do it again in 3 months....worst case you are out postage, no biggs. Just keep positive. I started in a very busy retail area, and still it took me 3 solid years to REALLY build. Enough to go out on my own. Persistence pays off, you just have to keep at it even when the days drag on and on and on and on.....
You're brilliant! Thank you!!!
HI lisa,
Thanks you so much for all of this information, its really helpful. Ive been a little lost.
I have done the "welcome to the neighborhood" card as well. Most areas will post these in a local newspaper.
