Help! Please advise me on dealing with being a booth renter and having to deal with drama from either the part-time esty's who aren't friendly, newbie esty that seems threatened and the competition is tough. Or the massage therapist I rent from who refuses to act professional and rants and raves making threats and saying "if you don't like it just move out."

Honestly I am disappointed in my own industry in regard to working together as team players.........I had no idea how cut throat it would be. How do you keep it together and stay professional.

You are a booth renter. That says it all.

You are an independent business person sharing space with other "professionals" and their obligations and expectations begin and end with letting you have your booth at the contracted times.

You are NOT part of a team, so don't kid yourself to expect anyone to act like they are on a team. Don't project your feelings or expecations on others who don't share them, you will end up disappointed.

If you want to be part of a team, become an employee somewhere. If you want to lead a team, start your own spa and hire employees (contractors, by law, are not part of a team either)

As with any job -- figure out what YOU want out of it, find a situation that will provide that. If you don't either don't sign up for that work, or don't be disappointed when it does not meet your expectations.

The answer is... it shouldn't be 'cut throat' at all.  Sorry you're dealing with that!

Is everyone there a booth rent situation?  Or is there a mix of employees, ICs and booth rent?

For the MT to say you should just move out, is very unprofessional and proves that not everyone is a good fit for owning a business/center or running a business. :/

What R&R says, tho, is true.  You are a booth rent situation, therefore you should be coming and going as you please, seeing your clients, and the 'drama' should not really be relevant.  I guess I don't understand how or why your business is intersecting with all these other people?

I, originally was going to lease out space to an MT and Esty, but thankfully a good soul on here (and another MBoard) showed me why that wouldn't be the best option!  Your situation is EXACTLY why!  Its not a harmonious working relationship when there are a bunch of renters out for their own business and their own business alone.  It isn't ONE business being run together with like-minded people, it isn't one business being run by ONE owner with employees below him/her carrying out the owners vision!

Its many businesses being corralled by a Landlord.

You need to separate yourself from the drama and run your business and the room you rent.  Except for passing these other people in the hallway/restroom, there shouldn't need to be a lot of interaction.

Thank you Nicole, I will clarify. I am under zero illusion regarding what booth rental is like. I passed the boards two years and started renting space in a salon upstairs with hairstylist, nail tech's, etc. What I am discovering is basis dishonesty from those I rent from. I love my profession however don't understand the drama in the industry.  So thank you for your understanding. When I originally met with the current landlord she very happy to have me come on board. Most of her other staff are employees who get a commission. With the exception of the part-time esty/nail tech. I even went in halves with a mail out Mother's Day flyer and now she has hired a new esty start out of school who is benefiting from my investment. Meanwhile the landlord is trying to move me to another room and does the whole "you can move out" infront of the new esty.

I have a wonderful clientele and for the most part don't interact with the other staff. But I never dreamt they would be this childish. I am choosing to look at it as a compliment of how good I am..... they undercut my prices, but can't compete....my clients love that I give them extra time and premium products, that I am skilled and travel to shows to learn new techniques, etc.

I just honestly think there are enough clients for us all and we don't need to act so trashy.

I suggest you take her up on the "move out" offer.  I'm not sure where you are, but I'm sure there are other places for you to rent from, with people who are not as childish, or at least keep to themselves.

I've worked in a few high drama salons, and I will NEVER put up with it again.  I've worked in places where women 3x my age cried and threw screaming fits in front of clients over where we placed a makeup stand...NOPE.  I don't want to be spending ANY time or ANY energy dealing with volatile and emotionally toxic people....

I understand Rosemarie! When I returned  from maternity leave, my boss fired me and when I started working somewhere else  the new early and my boss told all kinds of lies about me.  It's actually been hard to recover from. The new esty there treated me like an idiot when I trained her. I spent.  Long time questioning myself. No more. I work with wonderful people and am commission. I love love love it!
