Wow!  Have you heard about this?  The tanning industry is countering claims that tanning beds cause skin cancer with arguments that "tanning is a good source of vitamin D, and thus a bulwark against all manner of illness, including breast cancer, heart disease and autism".  Do those benefits outweigh the science?  The article goes on to say that the tanning industry is also arguing that "dermatologists, sunscreen manufacturers and even charities like the American Cancer Society -- are part of a profit-driven conspiracy. These critics are described as a “Sun Scare industry” that aims to frighten the public into avoiding all exposure to ultraviolet light. The tanning industry blames this group for causing what it calls a deadly epidemic of vitamin D deficiency, and tries to position itself as a more trustworthy source of information on tanning’s health effects."  What do you think?  You can read the entire article via the link

Ridiculous. How is the American Cancer Society the "profit-driven conspiracy" in this situation, rather than the tanning bed manufacturers themselves!? I think the comparison to Big Tobacco's fight against peer-reviewed research is perfect. They're quite obviously denying decades of scientific research only because it hurts their business model.

WOW!

I say tell them to back up their claim with science!! Yes we do seem to have a Vita D deficiency but not because of using sunscreen. It is because our children have or are growing in a world where they do not go out to play like I did when I was young. We need a little sunshine and a little is all we need to get that D.  Show me a sun or tanning bed goddess who did not use sunscreen in her teens and twenties, and now in her 40's or 50's who does not have some type of sun damage.  Again, like Abram stated, these businesses is upset because maybe, finally people are realizing the truth about the damage these beds can cause and it is hurting their businesses.  I personally think the sun is strong enough that if we put sunscreen on our selves and children, then go outside and play for a few hours, it will pass thru our hair and give us all the D we need for the day. So our exposed skin needs sunscreen. And people that use tanning beds do not use sunscreen for then it deletes the purpose of tan excelarators!!! Those UV BULBS!!! So show me the science behind their claim! I think the American Cancer Society has proved their science and is winning!!!

It's amazing that we have never heard about this national epidemic of Vitamin D deficiency before. If it was such a problem you'd think somebody other than the tanning industry would have mentioned it by now. I know I can barely walk down the street anymore without seeing people with the hair loss, rickets, and bowlegs that come from extreme Vitamin D deficiency. Thank god the tanning industry has finally found a solution! </sarcasm>

As Diane says, being outdoors for even a few minutes a day, plus eating a normal amount of completely normal foods like fish or eggs, is all that's needed.

I do agree with you about never "really hearing about a National Epidemci of  Vita D deficiency. But I have alot of friends, and just like myself who are being told  to take a supplement of Vita D by our doctors.  So to me it seems that we don't get outside much as we should.  And again I am over 50 now so that may be a reason that the doc in recommending it.

I really do not think the Tanning Bed industry has a leg to stand on, by taking a stand against the American Cancer Society!

This is one subject that I am personally passionate about and have spent a lot of time researching due to my genetic predisposition. I am a Fitzpatrick II, burn nearly every time I am in the sun for longer than 10 minutes unprotected. I have lentigenes all over my body from my childhood sun exposure- very little on my face now though (thank God for great skincare!). I have been a big advocate for SPF from the moment I realized beautiful women that covered their faces with hats and sunscreen looked great in their 50s, 60s and 70s. I wanted that too.

And Diane, I have heard that too, a few older friends of mine have been told they have a deficiency. And one of my girlfriend's doctors said to take a supplement and to enjoy the sun more- for a total of 10 minutes a day. That's it. And he wasn't talking about a tanning bed with pressurized UVA rays shooting right through your skin and microwaving your organs, mutating your DNA. He was talking about good old fashion sunshine while clothed. And Carrie is right, nutrition to supplement Vit D goes a long way too.

Show me a woman who has been a habitual tanning-bed goer, and I'll show you leathered/weathered, photo-damaged skin-- and that's just on the outside! Imagine what's going on inside her body. Does anyone remember her?

Cancer is not fictitious and the American Cancer Society was founded to help educate victims and their families. We know that skin cancer is due largely in part by UV rays, they are a proven human carcinogen! And people that use tanning beds are 2.5x more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5x more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma- and I think it is despicable that they are alleging such deplorable claims like, “The Sun Scare people are just like Big Tobacco, lying for money and killing people,” Joseph Levy, executive director of Smart Tan, said in the D-Angel video. That is just sickening, there is nothing “smart” about tanning.

Autism?? How can they justify that one!

Just amazing that they still allow sunbeds to be used, in New Zealand at least some legistration is happening.
