Four months ago I had a really bad reaction to the skin care products I'm using personally and on my clients. At first I thought my skin may have been "purging" and I just needed to give it time. Then I thought about if I had changed anything in my diet or anything else in my day to day routine, and I know for a fact I didn't. Now my clients are asking me to lean more towards organic products, that just gives me more reason to get rid of what I'm currently using. My question is, has anyone else had to quickly phase out their current backbar products and if so how did you do it? Did you sell what you had left or just toss it? Thanks!

It probably depends on how old it is and whether or not the containers are open to contamination.
If they are not products that you can/would use on yourself or clients then you will need to decide what to do with them.
Gather everything together to see what you have left that you know you don't want to use anymore and estimate what's left in each container.
If products are fairly fresh and full you might offer to sell to another esthetician at a big discount...or give them away to one of your estie friends if the real value is less than $100.
If products are old and on the emptier side I would just toss them.
I don't know what your reaction was - but stress can wreck havoc with hormones. The terms organic and natural are thrown around a LOT, so be clear on what exactly your clients are asking for. Usually they just want products that are non-toxic and safe for them to use...without any junk (like fragrance).
Thank you, Cindy! "Organic" and "Natural" are everywhere but if you actually read the ingredients, you will find that not everything is as it says. This is not just true for skin care.
I love your tell it like it is attitude. :) I'm the same way and really respect it!
These are a few different things I've done over the years...
I once had a small amount that i stopped using and I donated it to a women's center because most of the products were for sensitive skin so there weren't any irritating products they would be using. Then you can get pic and use it for PR/Marketing. They can provide you with a receipt for donation. It was a small amount so it wasn't a huge lose.
If it's a lot, maybe just mark them down considerably and sell to clients but make sure they know you won't be restocking it in the future. I created a little basket with all the products I wanted to get rid of and just put it out as clearance.
Talk to reps for your current lines and ask if they have a buy back option. Some lines will buy your current product line when you open a new account. I'm in the process of doing this now. Your clients are asking for something more organic and I'm phasing out the Image Ormedic line because my clients have very little interest in organic products so I can't sell it.
Give products as gifts- cleanser, spf combo to friends.
The products I phased out didn't cause a reaction in my skin, I just didn't move them well but they were still good products so I didn't have a problem giving them to others. I would usually just explain that it was still a good xyz, but i found another product that I'm seeing better results with so it wouldn't remain in stock. I tried all these things because I can't bring myself to throw out products as long as they aren't expired or harmful to the skin.
Good luck!
Just reread and realized you were talking about back bar -lol!
I do have quite a few retail products left so I will most definitely donate those! Thanks!
I sold mine to another Esthetician that was using the same products in my area and sold her all of my retail as well (when I was phasing into another product line). I ended up keeping the peels because I figure I could still use those. I sold them at a very discounted price and of course saved her the shipping cost. It was about $1000 worth of product for $600...that way I at least got something and she was very grateful. I gave her all of my literature and tons of samples as well. Another thought is to donate them. I have even just tossed some before.
Thanks, Sheila. I'll definitely try to find another esthetician and give her a big discount and I'll just toss everything else that isn't worth giving away.
I have even done that with samples...sometimes you think you want the samples and you get them and feel overwhelmed and then don't use them...so I had quite the collection. I found people in my area using the products and sent them. One actually reached out and thanked me and we are great friends now!! The other one I never heard a peep. LOL
