Your answer may be included in the Your Turn segment in ASCP Skin Deep magazine.

Have you ever tried coupon services that promote big, one-day discounts? If not, why not? If so, did it bring you more business?

I'm looking for 4-7 sentences on this topic. Please include your full name, city and state. Thanks!

During New Years I did Seize the Deal. I was on for 3 days, I had 85 deals sold. The only bad thing was I had 17 of my regulars buy the deal.  So I wouldn't let them use it with other promotions or specials. I did have over 40 new people buy, which was great.  The deal was 25.00 for 50.00, so alot of them bought 2 deals. I have had new people come in that didn't even buy the deal so that worked out great, and now I am seeing returns. I think it is worth it in the long run, but for now it was kind of a loss. I only get 12.50 per person, seize the deal took 12.50 per person, So if you take the 25.00 I am giving away x 85 people that is $2125.00 that I can write off, plus $1062.50 seize the deals portion. Total write off  $3187.00, I only made $1062.00

But now I am busy!!! I can upgrade them and sell them products.

I was just featured on Groupon on January 20th. It's been incredible! I've written an article about my experience on my website: http://www.shelleyhancock.com/grouponexperience.html

I have not done the large coupon services because I feel that it would hurt my business more then help. I feel that in most cases people who use those coupons for spa services will not generally be a regular client. Since it is just me, if I sold to many coupons I could not fit my regular people in at the times they prefer plus any coupon people. And lastly you would be working for almost free. If I am going to work for free I want it to be for charity.

I did my own large coupon and sent it to my Facebook and Contact List. I offered a $65 1 hr Facial and $65 in additional services for $65. If 3 of their friends purchased the gift certificate then I would give them a complimentary Back Bliss (facial). I felt like it was better to give gifts to my current clients then spending money on new ones. Or encouraging people that come to me for waxing to try a facial instead. I was happy with the number that I sold and I had 2 new people who purchased. My clients were thrilled with the offer and several had never had 1 of my facials.

I plan on offering something like this 1x/quarter. If I want to do something like this on a large scale, I can use my online gift certificate provider to do a "BoomTime" Deal and their percentage they take is only like 3-5% not 40-50%!

I have advertised coupons/discounts for special treatments, and offered discounted rates for a day of the week which was typically slow. The slow day of my week booked up just like that and remains booked each week, so though I am making less per service, I am still making more overall than I would have by not discounting. I prefer to just add on a service as the added value for the client, rather than discounting a service. Clients get to experience an additional treatment for 'free' which they may want to include at the regular price in their next appointments. In my experience offering very reduced rates attracts 'coupon' hoppers rather than the type of clientele I seek (long-term clients), so I do not do much coupon advertising.

Yes!

I used groupon,  we offered 60.00 worth of waxing for 29.00, we sold 244!

We are a small 450 sqft Waxing Parlor so 244 was a Good number!

I had only been open for 9 months, and thought it was a perfect way to advertise. It was a little over whelming at first, I offer online booking, and my books filled up very quickly!

Some of my Clients did purchase them, but most were New clients, some purchased 2  or 3  groupons, which they gave away to their friends.. Id say 60% booked Brazilian Wax..

in the end , It was a  huge success,  and I can honestly say, I have retained 90% of the New Groupon Clients, and most of them have refered their friends to us!

Im gonna offer another one soon!

Groupon is the most well known in our area, however not just anyone can utilize their service.  I rent space in a nice salon and they did not feel our salon was good enough to be featured on their site.  The terms that we were quoted were 50% of our package price.  Not so great in my opinion, Ex. you discount a $100 service by 40%, that brings it to $60 and they take 50% of that leaving you with just $30.  A good percentage of those people may only be bargain hunters and not willing to pay your regular price of $100 in the future.  Not great in my book.  I do have a service that I can offer similar type specials, however I have to do all the promotion for it.   I feel you need a pretty good sized contact list for that to work.  I guess it just depends on your particular situation.
