A couple of weeks ago my husband and I went to a local restaurant and at the end of our meal the waitress handed us a sealed document and told us not to open it. She said if we came back before the expiration date (it was only two weeks away) the manager would open it in front of us to see what we got. She told us there was the possibility of an Italy vacation and also $100,000.
Having this little document encouraged us to return before two weeks. There's something about the intrigue of possibly getting something big. We really like this resaurant and would of returned eventually anyway but probably not in less than two weeks. You guys get where I'm going here???
So. I've made up little documents with facials for10%, 20% and 50% off and also a free facial. There is also a few 20% off of products and free treatment extras. Most of them are for 10% off though and only one free facial in the bunch.
Here's what I'm offering...when a client purchases a gift certificate this holiday season, she gets to pick out one of these sealed documents to use in January. She must come back for her treatment in January with the document sealed in order to redeem it.
Oh yeah...we got 10% off of our meal that day! I was sure hoping for that Italy trip!

Shelley, I LOVE your idea! What a clever idea to tempt them to buy your gift certificates! I will be doing this! Thanks for sharing your idea!
Oh good, I'm glad that it may be helpful for you. Please keep me posted and let me know what you think of or how you incorporate the idea. I'm interested to see how it will work for you!

Even if you had a little punch card and you called it a "Skin Care Passport" and the clients received a stamp or punch for coming in for a mixture of both waxing and facial services.
We did this as a motivational/sales tool for our spa staff. Cross selling goals, retail goals, upselling, rebooking, etc. We did it in July and August and called it Summer Spa Bingo.
Love this idea Shelley - I will have to steal it! Thanks bunches for sharing.
How would you handle this if you sell gift certificates online? A good portion of my gift certificate sales are online. Have them schedule their appt and give them an envelope when they come in?
Yes! Make sure you make it clear on your website that they'll be receiving the envelope when they come in for their appointment.
Here's another one that I'm putting out next week for November:
We just moved to a new town and there's a local juice bar we checked out and really liked. They handed us a card for 20% off to use every time we come in during October. Because we really like this place we've been there just about everyday since we moved here....that 20% coupon encouraged us to return. So, I got to thinking....how can I get people to come in several times during the month? Here's what I came up with:
I'm sending out an email to my skincare clients next week. Pay a one time fee of $150 for as many 30 minute LED Light treatments as they want to come in for during the month of November (limited to 3 per week because they need that day in between treatments). I noted on the email to please come in with no base makeup. We'll do a quick cleanse, put them under the Celluma for 30 minutes, moisturize and sunscreen...send them on their way! This will set us up for clients to realize how beneficial LED can be when done on a regular basis. If you have a second room, set them up in there so you can be working on someone else in your other room. Easy income and happy clients!
I'll keep you posted on how many bites we get once the email goes out!!
Thanks - that sounds interesting.....I don't use machines though. I will have to think how I could use that idea.
I am actually doing up coupon books (1 coupon/month) for 2014 - they are going to be a fund raiser for the charity we are partnering with for our open house. Sometimes they have to buy something to get something free, sometimes just a discount, small free service or item. The coupon books value at $200 and the charity is selling them for $20. Gets me some new clients and raises money for a great charity working with furry creatures.
I did something similar a few years ago for client Christmas gifts but this idea I got from another friend.
So excited to have some new interesting things to try. Thanks for everyone's ideas.
I've seen this at a few restaurants.
I think you need to make the prizes actual items or services, not just discounts. They know if they wait a few weeks the holiday discounts will come their way.
I do a Cyberweek specials for Thanksgiving and I usually do a 12 days of Christmas special but instead I am doing a 12 day specials around Chinese New Year. 12 Animals - 12 days.....There gets to be too much going on around the holidays anyhow so I figured this will start on Jan/31 and got to Feb 10. So works out well....I usually celebrate Chinese New Year anyhow. It is when I give presents to my top clients. I don't always discount services - I work hard for what I do but this last year I have and my clients always appreciate that I let them participate and that it is just not for new clients. I figure my regulars deserve a bigger thank you because they have paid my mortgage for 12 years!
Shelley,
Very cool idea. Thanks for posting.

WhooHoo...you guys! I sent the email out this morning about the November LED Special. I just talked to the esty that's running my business (now that I'm down in Southern California) and the phone has been ringing off the hook! The reply emails still come to me and within 30 minutes of sending out that email, I received three inquiries about appointments. I think we have a winner here with this special!! I'll keep you posted on how many of these clients we get hooked to come in on a regular basis once the month is over.
