How do you add on higher end services when you don't have the budget to do so yet?

I have been getting alot of questions from clients about oxygen facials, and also laser treatments, I keep sending clients to other I know who do this, and feel like the $$  is slipping right out of my hands! I can't afford any real pricey machines yet, and would still need certifications too, what's everyone doing?

oh - and Theresa, there are other ways of having higher end services than by having expensive equipment.

Clients want results.

If you have amazing products, are knowledgeable, and creative you can come up with GREAT treatments.

My best promotion ever was just combining some of my products and techniques in a new way, coming up with a great name and description, and offering it at what looked like an amazing price. THAT facial did not involve any equipment at all...not even a steamer!

Look at the products and treatments that you already have that you LOVE...brainstorm with some girlfriends and see what happens.

I have been watching the answers come in and have to agree with getting good products. Personally, I do not charge anything. I set my sites on the items I wanted, saved and bought as I could. A year out, I have all my waxing stuff, steamer/ozone, portable diamond microdermabrasion, and just recently added 7 color LED/MicroCurrent, hand held units.

I bought trial sizes of products until I had everything PCA carried, and now buy full sizes when I know I will use them and still buy the trials for the things I don't use as much. Recently addied all the acne products from Face Reality. For me, at this time, this is it. Perhaps if facial business really takes off I will feel the need to add more.

There will always be people asking for treatments you can't offer yet or may never want to offer. It's hard especially in the beginning to have to pass them on, but we can't be all things to all people.

When a clients ask me about a service that I don't perform, I try to determine if their questions are just curious  ("oh, I heard about blah, blah, what would that do for me") or if they have a specific issue that they want to address that they think (they aren't the professional, you are) would be best addressed by that service.  Is there something that you can do that would provide similar results?  In short, don't give those clients away unless you absolutely positively need to.  I don't do laser hair removal or electrolysis, so I'm kinda screwed there...but I'd never give away a client who feels she needs an oxygen facial.    In the event you really need to refer out, don't do it for free.  Those are present and future dollars slipping out of your hands (and trust me, I do feel your pain).  If there are several other practitioners performing laser treatments, visit some ("hi, this is Teresa, can I schedule a few minutes of time to chat about a referral process for my clients who may want your services?") to personally check them out and learn what they charge for their services so you have a better idea of the value of your clients to them before you set up any referral plan...and don't forget, they might be more willing to trade their own services than part with cash.  Need any laser work? Judging from your picture, I suspect not, but you understand what I'm saying.

Best wishes.

One thing a seasoned Esty said to me was...stick to what you know and ROCK IT!  Don't get wrapoped up in the latest and greatest technology, unless you can really afford it.  There are so many treatments  and machines that all eventually accomplish the same outcome, so stick with the basics to start and slowly build on that.  I felt so overwhemled being a newer Esty and all of these latest and greatest things, how do you keep up?  It felt so good when she said to me, just stick with what you know best.  I personally am more of a therapeutic Esty, while I am a "clinical esty"or whatever you want to name it, I like the relaxing side too so I do peels and micros but very therapeutic as well.  not sure where you stand, if you tend to like more medical esthetics or what, but that is just my thought.  :)  Good luck!!

I agree with Sheila as well.  There was just a great article in the Skin Deep Magazine talking about how to create a part-time practice, which is what I currently have.  My long-term goal is to do this full-time, because it's not a job for me.... it's my passion and I love what I do.  But, in the article it says that you cannot be a master of all modalities; pick your niche and excel at that!  I think this goes for even full-time practices.  Laser is not something I can afford either, but I'll be darn if I don't try to give the BEST darn facial and chemical peel ever.  I use other small pieces of equipment like the Ultrasonic Scrubber and Dermafiles, as well as shoulder, neck, hand and arm massage, which all enhance the typical facial.  Make customer service a priority and your clients will keep coming back for more!  Good luck to you!  ;-)

Hi Teresa,

I am actually an Esthetician in partnership with a Medical Doctor who does laser treatments.  I can tell you, I do peels, microdermabrasion and micro-current facials that I've seen better results for; Hyperpigmentation, Wrinkle Reduction, Rosacea, Acne, and general over all glowing skin.  You don't need expensive equipment, look into a good skincare line.  I use Image Skincare!! It's AMAZING, there is no min purchase and they have a great education program.  I've been asked about Oxygen Facials, and have to say, all they really need is hydration. Look into options for rental, don't feel that because they ask for these treatments, you don't have something in your arsenal to help them. Always ask "Why" they want these treatments and find a way to help them.  When it comes to skincare, just like cosmetology, people want to stay with one person they are comfortable.  Just believe in yourself to find the best treatment for your client, research and solve the problem.

Thanks to all of the Estheticians who gave great advice on here! Just catching up on it now...

Love all the support!!! thanks ladies xo

Hi Teresa

Check out the Skinr'gy system on our website healingzone.net.  $1495 for the unit and one each of our four formulas.  While there go to our  You Tube Channel.. HZTV (on the menu bar) and watch the quick video with our formulator regarding our new formulas.  We have added seaweeds for DNA repair, peptides, anti-oxidants, resveratrol and other great ingredients to the liquid O2 for powerful repair and rejuvenation.

Lots of great feedback here. Coming from the education and liability side of the comments I would just like to add; NEVER, EVER use concentrated medical oxygen in your practice. It is highly flammable, medical use only and you will not get liability coverage for that. Please keep in mind your scope of practice as well when buying equipment. If you have questions and are a member of ASCP you have access to free technical help. Just email me sschmaling@ascpskincare.com and I can get you unbiased information and resources.

If you want a really inexpensive but very effective treatments, try layering modalities like galvanic current, microcurrent, LED and microdermabrasion. I can get you the protocols.
