I just read the May 2012 issue of Pulse magazine, and Mae Manacap-Johnson, editor, in the Pulse Review section states that according to The Herman Group founder Roger Herman who some consider "the father of employee retention," 75 percent of people voluntarily leaving jobs don't quit their jobs; they quit their bosses.

I'm fortunate right now that my boss is a very intelligent and kind mentor, and I am constantly learning from her, but I'm sure that's not the case with others out there. Have you ever had a boss so bad they made you quit your job?

Only once in my life have I done this..I walked out without a notice. This was back in the 80's. He was a Plastic Surgeon. I was his first employee and I worked my butt off for him. I was front and back office. I came in on weekends if he needed me. I even painted his office for him while he was at a conference (I was young then and a little bit crazy!). When raise time came he gave me 25 cents an hour raise. That wasn't the greatest raise but that's not what made me quit. He hired a new gal to help out because were starting to get busier and I saw the paperwork regarding her.....he started her out at one dollar more per hour than I was making. After all the hard work I had put in for him, I just couldn't believe it!

I got a fabulous job at a Derm office the very next day...it was meant to be!!

Shelley, unfortunately, you're probably not alone in your experience! At least the end result was positive for you! Thanks for sharing your "bad boss" story!

Too many to count!!  LOL  However, now that I am a boss, I see things differently.  I can't always say "yes".  Even though I try to treat my employees the way that I wanted to be treated, sometimes it just isn't good business.  I  keep an open line of communication with all my employees and try to communicate effectively.  Employee turn over is incredibly expensive so employee retention is just as important as client retention.  I have recently learned that if people are unhappy on their life, the grass is not green on ANY side in any business.  Despite my best efforts to make this person happy, the demands were unrealistic.  I truly believe that I am getting so karma!!!  LOL

Tiffany, I, too, am a boss, and your reply prompts me to want to check in with my staff to make sure all is well! While you can't always say "yes" or be a "friend" to your employees, I always want to make sure I am available to listen and be as open-minded and fair as I can. Yes, it's not easy having a bad boss, but it's also not easy being a good boss, either!
