I am in the process of getting my own room and maybe starting to spray tan. The room I am looking at is pretty small but I think this service would be popular. For those of you that do tanning how much room do you need? Do you use a tent in your esti room? I would like as much info as possible.

I use VIP Premium Blends based out of St Petersburg, Fl. I chose them for a few reasons, one they are close to where I live so I can go there for product and avoid shipping, ttheir customer service is awesome, and I know a few Estys that used their product as well. The color is really awesome, looks like a nice natural tan, never orange, and I get compliments whenever I am sprayed or I spray someone. I had someone ask my boyfriend if he had been on the boat :). I would be happy to give you the contact information or check out their website and see if you like what you see. I am not a rep or anything so I am not pushing a sale because I am getting anything just letting you know. The person that I talk to all the time is named Michael. He is awesome, always calling and checking up on how everythign is going. I am new to this field as of Nov and I started my own business right out of school, just a small space that I am renting, 325 sq ft and I will attach a photo to see where my tent is in the room.
A few tips: you should only need about 2 to 2.5 oz of product for the avg person, keep nosle barely open (just enought for producvt to come out) and hold spray gun about 2-3 inches away from client, that way you are not wasting product by overspraying. YOU TUBE YOU TUBE YOU TUBE!! There are some great instructional videos on there, especially tips for spraying hands and feet, this part is usually the hardest and takes the most practice I think. Find someone that is willing to let you practice on them 4-5 times, probably best if it's someone you see on a reg basis so you can see for yourself how the tan comes out and what areas you need to work on mastering. Have them stand on a towel or something in the tent. Oh, I use a little room heater when I am spraying that is direcvted onto the client because the solution feels really cold when it comes out, clients really like this. Make sure to buy some exfoliating gloves so you can exfoliate them if they didn't, make it an add on for like $5. Make sure the client has on no makeup, lotion or deoderant and wait 7-9 days between sprays (the last 2 tips from personal experience :) ).
Oh and with VIP, I do not like their barrier cream but you can use any lotion really for dry areas, and hands and feet. They have an exfoliating spray that you can get too. They have new products out, I have not tried them yet, but they sent me samples of them (8oz samples too!!)
Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am definitely not an expert and I am sure other people will ahve some great tips and information too.
keep me posted on what you decide :).
thank you for all your info! I am also a new esti and I am just opening up my own room this week! I am not sure if I will have room for spray tans yet I am going to wait until I get everything in my room set up. If you would nt mind sending me a pic of your room I would love to see it my email is summerr1113@gmail.com again thank you!
well the nice thing about the tanning is, it's mobile, and the tent collapses easy so maybe you don't have room to leave up all the time but could pop it up and down when needed. I keep mine up because I have the room, but it folds up pretty easy once you get how to do it...you tube that too bc it took me a few tries then it was the AHH HAA moment. here is a pic of my tent, then my room and the one of my room, the you can kind of see the little corner of the tent. Good luck with everything!! It's definitely not as easy I thought it was going to be but I am happy workin for myself, I just need more clientele...I did well first few weeks but things have slowed down so I gotta get out there and market myself better. Are you in a salon or busy area? I am not off a busy road but the place I rent has a pretty interesting set up and there is a lot of traffic with the organic cafe that is there so I am hoping for some potential clients from that. No problem, I wish I had someone helping me when I started in Feb and leading up till that moment so anything I can share I am happy to do so!! What products are you going to be using?
Sheila I'm also a sole proprietor looking to do spray tans, Thank you for all of this wonderful information. Your room is beautiful !
I agree, your room is very well done! That is an awesomely large room--kind of hard to find a space that large and well-suited here in my area of TX but I am in the process of building out a space so maybe I can borrow some of your ideas. I've been stressing between a tent in the corner versus building a shield for the walls (as you know, the units go for up to $3000 and I just don't think they are necessary). Glad to see this is working for you!
If you need help with any ideas let me know. I would be happy to help. I also have an interior design background so space planning is my thing :).
Ha that makes me laugh because I too had the AHA moment! After about 3 times of taking 15 minutes each! My husband was cracking up!
Hello Sheila, this is Cristina, i want to thank you for your helpful comments here for us. i just read this conversation about spray tanning and i will take a look to your supplier's web page. please i would like to ask if you got any solution staining the walls or equipments around the tent due to the spray tanning. i was told that happens, that we do not see it but when time comes we will notice it, what about your experience with this tinting color in your room which looks so comfy i love it. or maybe it depends on the quality of tent?
if there is anything i can help you with, please let me know, i will love to share with all of you too.
thank you
cristina
Well I am not spray tanning full time...I do one here and there so I don't notice anything. I barely have any overspray so when I wipe my tent down after every use, theres not much to wipe. I think getting a good quality tent would prevent that and if you contact VIP you can ask them any questions about that. Their formulas are all scented so your room isn't going to smell. They have things like VS love spell, lemongrass, green lily clove, about 10 different scents to choose from, kinda cool! I never knew until recently. LOL. Like I said too, I don't get anything from them when I recommend their product and I do not work for them, just use their solution...which is amazing! I have NEVER had anyone say they hated their tan or they were orange and you will be blown away from their customer service. If you are concerned about fumes there is an area in the back of the tent where you can put a fan. Also when I spray my clients, I have a little heater to keep them warm bc the formula can be a bit cold..well some of them at least, others aren't. They are constantyly coming up with new forumlas and they are pretty great about giving you a sample if you are already a customer of theirs. The sample can get about 2-3 spray tans too. SO AWESOME!!
