I'm contemplating going to work for Massage Envy doing Murad facials. I welcome any input re: if this franchise is a good employer. Thanks!!

no!!! I started as a esthetican when they first brought facials to their services... DO NOT waste you time!! They write EVERYONE up for the most mundane things... and the protocol is like working for the military.. You only make $15 off every facial you perform.. and they offer 4 facials only... they also want you to push their (very expensive) product line, which,  after just 1 month - the products actually started to eat away at my fingertips..(our most valuable tool as esti's!!)

If you'd like more info to back up my statement, type "working fo Massage Envy" on your browser..you'll see I'm not alone!

Good Luck on your Quest!  :)

Thank you, Kim, for your input!! One of my sisters used to live in Flagstaff; hope all is well for you there. Rebecca
They seem to have a permanent ad on Craig's List in Arizona.  That's usually an indication that something isn't quite right with the company.  It's too bad.  I've always enjoyed getting massages there.
Thanks for your reply, Kim.  I did meet with the owner of the particular location and didn't like her personality; no health care or spa background and also was very curt. She also wouldn't give me a straight answer re: how many hours they needed from someone. The facials can't be customized in any way--apparently there are strict protocols for ea. facial. Didn't like that either!

I'm glad I could save you the anguish! Just keep in mind- if it wasn't ment to be, that means something better is on its way!

Good Luck on your hunt!!   :)

I have heard bad things about them too. Besides, would you really be happy doing McFacials all day ?!

Better opportunities await.....

M

Hi Mary,

I appreciate you input--the concensus seems unanimous!! I'm actually looking at moving to sales for a prestige line at one of the big department stores. I enjoy educating clients about products/ingredients and selling, so this may be a good option since the spa treatment side of our industry is so depressed right now.  All the best, Rebecca

Hahaha! McFacials, thats hilarious!

thank you all, i was also offered a position....now i am rethinking this

You should find out for  yourself.  I think most of the comments here are alarmist and dont give you the whole picture.

"They offer 4 facials only"

Quantity does not = quality.  We have 2 spas at top hotels in NYC and for 3 years we only offered 4 facials. Guess there is something wrong with my business.

"they also want you to push their (very expensive) product line"

How are you supposed to sell any retail products otherwise? Those products don't just jump of the shelves into the client's handbag. I guess the treatment is just so fabulous the client asks for precisely the right thing every time and you don't have to lift a finger to educate them on their needs.

And those ME folks must be TOTAL idiots to try to sell such expensive products to clients who buy cheap-o facials. They just don't have a clue, do they?

And what makes you think Murad is expensive?  Their Anti Aging Moisturizer, 1.7 oz, costs $47 retail, pretty much the cost of a ME facial

Elemis has Pro Collagen Marine Cream for $128 for the same size, which sells like gangbusters to people paying $150  for a facial at one of our spas

Murad Toners are around $22 for 6 oz

Elemis Toners start at $36

Seems to me like MURAD products are priced proportionally to the services in which they are used.

after just 1 month - the products actually started to eat away at my fingertips

Then you should be suing Murad and contacting the FDA and Consumer Protection Agency.  Really?!!??!

You only make $15 off every facial you perform

How much do you think someone should get paid on a $50 facial, as an employee, with all products and equipment and supplies provided, Workers Comp coverage, Unemployment Insurance and an hourly minimum just for showing up for work on a day when there are no appointments?

Things are called "Entry level jobs" for a reason. We all have to start some where in our chosen profession.

no health care or spa background

Meaningless. I have neither.  Would you turn down a full time position that pays $45k, plus tips, plus retail commission plus company paid health insurance, plus paid vacation, plus discounts at hotel stays nationwide just because the owner does not have the background you think they should have?

The facials can't be customized in any way--apparently there are strict protocols for ea. facial.

protocols are usually defined by the manufacturer after considerable research. We have protocols for all of our services as well.

would you really be happy doing McFacials all day ?

Not sure what a McFacial is, but clearly the OP is not happy what she is currently doing or she would not be looking

Massage Envy and other Mcfacial places are ment to be used by people w a lower income that cant afford pricey spas and expensive products.. These very "budgeted" folks want products that they can afford; drug-store prices... I think you may have forgot about the no-so-wealthy clients that still do want nice skin.. They are people too, and want affordable skincare.

I believe some spas like to forget about those lower budgeted clients out there.

I agree. If you are new to the industry and looking for work, they are a great starter! YOU HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE! Cant be too picky in the beginning because YOU'RE a beginner and so is your career. You have to pay your bills somehow right?

It may not be for everyone, but more power to the Esti's that don't jump from one job to another because of things THEY need to work on building up (:

Love you Ladies & Gents!
