I have never really encountered men for facial so much as I have when I start working in a Day Spa. I, also, have never learned the proper way to do a male facial. When I was in school they said that all manipulation need to go in the direction of the hair grown, but that doesn't seem to clean them properly, and my clients always end up feeling uncomfortable. Do I just need more practice, or am I missing some kind of technique?

Not sure why you don't feel like you are getting them as clean. Maybe use an additional hot towel after you cleanse would help. Gauze may be a better choice to wipe toner with rather than the small rounds that catch of coarse hair.

Why they are uncomfortable? Are you maybe coming across that you are not comfortable with your techniques. You might check out the internet for men's facial videos maybe even for free on you-tube for help with your strokes. If we are really uncomfortable it does come across to clients. It's probably just that you need more practice. If you want to tell me what your doing for stokes I might be better able to help.

I use the standard strokes that you are supposed to do with a facial, except I go downward, with the growth of the facial hair. Doing that doesn't seem like I am doing them any kind of cleansing service as I don't feel like I am actually getting underneath the facial hair.

I have also found that putting towels around the chin and having the opening  at the forehead helps. Wipe down not up. Find a male friend with facial l hair and practice.

I actually already do that with all my facials. Hot towel applications isn't my problem, application of product and massage are my problem.

Do you feel like you are not getting the proper cleansing  because of the length of the hair?  Are you asking them to shave 24 hours prior to the facial? If the hair is longer, you should still go in the direction of the hair but then use your fingers to do a swirling motion to work through the hairs;  a steam towel followed by cleansing with the sponge will help rinse off the cleanser.

I don't do the booking but it is on our website and the person who des the bookings is supposed to tell them to shave 24 hours prior. However, I was told by my instructors to not have them shave until after the facial.

As far as cleansing, I was already doing the swirling motion to get underneath the hairs. So thank you for reassuring me that I was doing that part correctly.

Always use soft downward motions, even though that still hurts. Just remember woman are always upward and men down where ever they have hair.

I am doing downward strokes. Even for the massage? Wouldn't that end up doing more harm than good?

Thank you for all your tips, everyone! Most of you just ended up reassuring me that the technique I have is already correct! Which makes things easy, so thank you very much!
