I have a Beautiful Image machine and I've been using it facially for 6 months on myself and my sister with great results, and just got a NuFace machine w/ attachments to use on myself for touch ups as research for clients who may want to do this on their own.

QUESTION: When I open my business, I'll have a client who has a thyroid condition and wants me to help her firm up her neck. Do you have any advice for a new esty? I'd really appreciate it!

Whay kind of thyroid does she have.  As a person who suffers from thyroid condition and loves microcurrent, you could just avoid the thyroid gland which is at the base of the throat.

She has hyperthryroid. Is it ok to go slightly above it, say an inch above the clavicle?

Yes. like Amy said just avoid the thyroid gland. My whole family has thyroid issues, including myself and I have done many treatments on them as well as myself and have never had a problem using microcurrent on the neck. Make sure to avoid the thyroid and have them sign a waiver. Also I read that LED is a contraindication for Thyroid.. Not sure why, so I would need to research more.

I am not sure why led either. I love mine!!!

The skin for life machine has LED contraindicted for thyroid so I won't be using that...thanks so much to both of you for weighing in. Have a wonderful evening!

Well, if you are using the red light remember that the nm is very deep and it will stimulate collagen.

Talked to an endocrinologist today who specializes in thyroid disorders. She said LED has had no research in this yet. She does say that some thyroid medications can make you photosensitive, thus the contraindications. Did you know that some. People with mood disorders should not use LED either?

Thanks for letting me know, that's really interesting and I wonder why the mood disorders are impacted by LED. The photo sensitivity issue is good to know because I want to do peels as well.

Thank you Amy for the info. I also asked my Dr today about LED and he said that LED can stimulate the Thyroid, so in actuality this could be good for an underactive thyroid, but not good for someone who is hyper or hashimotos. He said RED light is healing for most but is also stimulating, so those who are already over stimulated, this could aggravate the situation.  He also said that Light Therapy is a mood altering treatment and there is a possibility of triggering a manic state from a depressive state in someone with bipolar or severe depression as his or her eyes might be more vulnerable to photo-toxicity. The eyes can become very sensitive to someone with mood disorders as well as Epilepsy. Blinking lights, which is a feature on some of the LED panels, is also a contraindication for epilepsy and can cause someone to have an episode. I thought that Red light LED does not emit any UV radiation (unless specifically designed for that purpose) so this form of light would not create photo sensitivities, so I'm a bit confused about that.  I know many dermatologist that say its ok to use while on Retin A, which is highly photosensitive.  I also read that those with auto-immune disease-most notably, MS, lupus or photodermatoses, may be sensitive to any light in the blue light spectrum so careful when using blue light for acne. Infrared is also a contraindication as it can cause a flareup in heat sensitive disease. So many things to learn :)

That is inter e sting. I have had hashimotos for years and since having my thyroid removed, no longer have to worry about stimulating it! Light therapy is mood altering for sure!  I forgot about epilepsy! But my device does not warn about it at all!

This is great stuff, thank you for finding this out!
