Hi Everyone,

I am an owner of a spa that just newly expanded and relocated and I would like to expand my services to include microdermabrasion.  I currently have the ultrasonic machine, which is marketed as "crystal free microdermabrasion", but I am finding that some clients are going to the Med Spas for micro treatments.  I would love to retain their business but there are so many options and such a wide price range for these micro machines, and quite frankly, it's mind boggling.

I am pretty certain I want the diamond tip vs the free crystals.  Does anyone have any experience in the micros?  Keep in mind, I do not work under a drs license and would need to be able to buy this machine as just a consumer or with my esty license.  Also, I have a tight budget and the machine would have to be on the economic side.  I'm thinking of spending between $1,000-2,000.  Is this reasonable?

Thanks!

Hi!

I have been researching microderm machines as well for my new business.  I have fallen in love with the bio-hydrodermV2 made by bio-therapeutics out of Seattle.  For $50, licenses professionals can receive a treatment using a machine that they are interested in.  That is how I learned about it and the results it produces.  It is $4995 so I am saving up!  Buying a used machine is a good way to go to stick in your $1000-2000 price range.  From my research however, it is difficult to find a quality, new machine in that price range.  Hopefully some our seasoned estheticians will be able to share something great with us! Good luck!

Brooke,

I will look into that company, for sure.  Thanks for the info and good luck to you.

Christine -

I think that ultrasonic exfoliation is great - but it is not "microdermabrasion", you might want to change that just so you don't confuse people. (jmho)

When I see the term "crystal-free microdermabrasion" I usually assume its a diamond tip machine.

I worked for someone who had "manual microdermabrasion" on her menu (she still does!) which was actually just a scrub...clients would get so ticked off!

I think that the regular crystal microdermabrasion gives clients better results, but with your budget the diamond tips probably the way to go.

Cindy,

I dont have it on my menu as "crystal-free micro".  It is how the comapany has marketed it.  I would be upset too if I thought i was signing up for micro and got a scrub!!!  Thanks for your advice.

MB,

I have done the research and I'm aware of the capabilities of the micros, but never really thought about toxicity.  Thanks for bringing it to my attention.  I will continue my research and will post back when I get more info.  Thanks for all the advice/feedback.  I really appreciate it.

I just purchased the Dermafiles from Shelley Hancock. I cannot afford a microderm machine right now,but have heard/read very positive things about these tools as an affordable, safer (for all skin types) procedure vs. microderm. Just a thought.

Thanks Jaclyn, I also have the dermafiles and dermaplaning.  But for some reason, the clients really want the machine. I also educate the clients and talk about the different techniques to arrive at the same results but for some reason, they dont trust that a manual exfoliation will get them to the same place as the machine. :/

wow MB, some scary stuff!  you know, part of me just wants to let the clients experience the micro machines at the med spas bc of the liability of it all.  I'm glad I'm getting all this info now.  Thanks so much!C

Before I bought my own I was always familiar with the newapeel system, I couldn't afford a new one, but found a used one for  $2000, with diamond wands, I like it alot...i'm sure you can find a company thats cheaper, or maybe lease one...good luck!

Thanks Teresa,  I will look into this one too!:)

I guess everybody has their own preferences!

That's what makes us all unique (and fabulous!)

There are a lot of clients out there that love microdermabrasion...and I think that just about everyone that does it finds that the clients like the results from the crystal units over the diamond wands...but there are some pro units (like the DiamondTome at $10K) that gives beautiful results.

I have a diamond tip unit it's a pro model not a cheap import and it was less than $2k

For my own practice, I much prefer peels.  I just use the microdermabrasion and ultrasonic for extra exfoliation and for prepping the skin for other procedures.

MB talks about the dangers of microdermabrasion, yet does dermaplaning. We can't use blades in our state - but there are some risks and contras involved.  I would not personally get this service but many people love it.

I had thought along the same lines when I made my decision about crystal vs diamond (safety etc), and went with the diamond tip.  I think if I could go back I would make a different choice. A quality pro unit is sealed and everyone who I have spoken with about this thinks I am silly for bringing up those concerns. However, I don't know enough really to defend their claims.

I would gladly provide a home for an orphan DiamondTome!

But at that price tag I think that I would probably at least check out something like a HydraFacial. Although Altair came out with an addon system for wet infusion. I saw it and had a treatment but it did not blow me away...that was a couple years ago and they may have something different to offer. And I have to admit I have never had a Hydrafacial treatment either! ;)

I have never seen or used an Ultrapeel unit...what have you learned about them so far?
