New Regulations Could Affect the Scope of Practice for Colorado Estheticians!

Your action is needed! The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies – Barber/Cosmetology has submitted a proposal for new regulations that could affect the scope of practice for Colorado estheticians. Some parts of the proposed amendment, particularly the language that states estheticians would be “prohibited from performing a service and/or using an implement, device or product, or combination of same that penetrates or in any way affects a client’s skin that is beyond the stratum corneum,” could limit virtually all currently accepted modalities in our profession. The proposed amendment is available for your review on the state’s website at this link. We urge you to attend the upcoming hearing on the proposed new regulations, so that our profession’s interests are represented in the proceedings. The hearing is set for Monday, October 1, 2012 at 10:00 am at 1560 Broadway, Conference Room 110A, Denver CO 80202.

Thank you Susanne for the update and for your excellent submission to DORA. I would love to be kept in the loop on this matter as well, as I'd like to attend any future meeting. I went to DORAs website earlier today and it was down for maintenance. I find it quite interesting that there was nothing at all posted on the website to notify interested parties about this process, or about the meeting. (I heard the meeting was listed for a short time but was removed.) I am on their email list but did not get any notification from them - I learned about it here. There is much more in their proposed changes that will change what we are able to do (or rather not do), from the important ones already mentioned here - all the way down to not being able to perform hand/arm/foot/head massage (still trying to figure out how that is harmful to clients).

Early this year, they tried to pass a law simular to this in Tennessee. Thankully, after much work gathering a petition, and a protest in Nashville, we managed to beat it. So don't give up, and make your voices be heard! And know that I am cheering you all on from my shop here in tennessee!

Perhaps there should be a petition so that out-of-state practitioners and businesses supporting the industry can get involved.

Has anyone ever created a matrix to see which states have already imposed this? Is there any website or organization that has a tool/database on all state legislation for practitioners? I was actually a practicing corporate attorney before my wife, an Esthetician, & I founded Terra Dolce . . . I know FL has similar legislation and it would be interesting to have an overview of state trends.
