pay rate?
Hi so i have been at home with my kids for a few years and am headed back to work i have been an estys for 9 years i am being hired on at a skin and laser spa as an indepentant contractor.
I was a contractor at my last job and made 50% comm while that is high i had a large client following now i am looking for 35-40% .
The offer i received and yet to sit go over it is for 30% on waxing and a per service flat amount of $25 is this a reasonable offer since i do have to become my own business and take care of my taxes again. i really feel like a flat comm % is the best way to go. i am a very hard worker and i give a 110% everyday i also have great sucess with building clients.

I have never worked for less than 50%. It depends what you want? When you think of yourself as a huge success is this a step in that direction?

thank you amy i am really struggling with this i want this to work but i hope she is willing to see things clearly this is the first time she is opening a spa she is a nurse so she is not exactly in the field. but i know she gets: you get what you pay for concept so hopefully that was just a jumping off point and she will be up for my changes.

% Pay is meaningless
% pay is an relative value, not an absolute value.
You and your work are ABSOLUTELY valuable, not relatively valuable.
Figure out what that value is and find a job that offers that. If you can't, start your own business or rethink the value you are bringing.
Anyone who wants to work for % commission, I will pay you 99% commission and can give you a full book of complimentary services for beauty editors, employees and friends and family I have been putting off for weeks.

I guess I'm dense because I don't understand what you mean. Commission is a percentage of the cost of a facial. It's not meaningless when you are making $1000.00 a week. I am guessing you should ask what she is going to charge for special people like say your mom or sister. Otherwise, she still has to pay you your percentage rate for h e r freebies. I did and still do a lot of free facials.My mom is always free. He mom is always free. Etc.

oh. I see what you mean. Neither are worth it if you don't have a client, it doesn't matter what the commission percentage is. I thought you were saying something else. It's just a common practice term. I also think it depends on your area. It is common in Indiana to do 50% or more for commission on services of facials in an established spa. Plus a percentage of retail. I know this is different in each state. Sooooo... it would depend on your area also I suppose.

or, if you don't believe in %
Pay = Commission x Average # of services
Without knowing the average price of services and/or the average # of services you can do at a given job, commission is a meaningless figure for determining the rate of pay

I would do the numbers...
ask what a typical day would look like. If they don't currently have a large clientele, they are expecting you to drum up business. There could be a LOT of s-l-o-w days!
I always believe that waxing whould be a higher %. Especially if you are supplying your own products - which you don't mention.
The "laser spas" usually want you to sell packages...and will sometimes give you a bonus fo that. Personally, I HATE doing laser service as it is tough on your hands (I guess it depends on the type of unit, but firing off the laser can cause a repetitive stress injury and hands are important in this biz).
The $25 rate is closer to what the membership spas pay ($15 plus tip). What about retail?
If there is no chance for increased pay or advancement I think I would pass on this, that rate is very entry level.
Or take the position and keep looking if you need employment right now. Very few places are paying a 50% commission anymore. Most places are offering 35%-40% to start. If you had a current client base the best situation is a rental space.
