In esthetics micro current is used primarily to tone and stimulate facial muscles. Considered a passive form of exercise this therapeutic technique helps stimulate motor nerves until a contraction of the muscle can be seen...taken straight from Milady Standard Text. Now with that being said TN State Law 440-2-16 Section 5 states that procedures that shall not be used include but are not limited to :A. application of electricity which contracts the muscles. So if I'm reading that correctly we are not allowed to use faradic or sinusoidal current or microcurrent here, right?

Wow, ok...thank you for answering my question by not answering my question but letting me know you are an expert in the field to which I asked the question but would like me to continue to be confused about the field to which your expertise would be much appreciated. Didn't think this was in any way an inappropriate question since this is a question/answer sort of place....hey but thanks for letting me know you're an expert though, I feel enlightened already.
Michelle - the wording in the regs seems like it was done specifically to address microcurrent.
It seems to leave high frequency and galvanic though...no muscle contraction with electrical application.
Wonder why they did that?
And I wonder how long ago that was written in.
Is there a real person to talk to at the state board, are alternatively, is there a school that might have some direct knowledge.
I will just bet that there are facilities that are doing microcurrent facials in TN though.
I don't know it's crazy, right? I mean anyone can buy one of those NuFace micro current handhelds. I bring it up because we were going over state law in class and when I got to the part about 'no muscle contraction' one of my students flipped back through the book and says so we can't use faradic and sinusodial current because it says here it causes muscle contractions. The text does indeed say that. But I know for a fact some TN estheticians use microcurrent all the time, it's a great treatment.
