Refresher courses
I am a licensed cosmetologist, been doing hair for 11 years and for the last couple of years I have been really looking into skin care. I've recently just gotten a job a salon after being a stay home mom for quite some time and the salon has a facial room but no one to do facials! So I'm taking it As a sign! I know I'm licensed to do facials but I would like to some advice on refresher courses or how to get certified for peels and dermis rations. Thanks!

A lot of skin care lines offer training and additional education. Does the salon have set line of products, or is that kind of up for discussion?

I think you need to start by receiving a few facials to experience all that goes into treating the skin. Then you need to probably purchase a Milady Esthetican textbook and read it through for skin histology, chemical, equipment, and sanitation procedures. Start out with simple facials, perfect your massage technique, and decide what style of esthetician you want to be. Do you want to do it all? Facials, waxing, enhancements, and makeup? Or do you want to specialize? Then get involved with skincare lines. Go to a conference, get some education, and develop your business. It's important to take baby steps into this to ensure you're providing the best service for your clients by understanding skin care and the nuances of the business.
In my opinion, most estheticians coming out of school are mostly just prepared to pass boards, then the real learning begins. Cosmetologists only get a fraction of education in esthetics and so are even less prepared to the complex business of skincare. That was also a long time ago for you so you have an long way to go to becoming a true esty. But with the right determination and commitment, you can do it.
