I am about to venture into the Booth Rental world and I hope its the right decision. Our spa has really put themselves in a place where we are so Groupon saturated, I can't make any money. We had a commission split all along ,and now that we sold so many Groupons my salary is greatly reduced. I have 29 years in the business and so I would love thoughts on Renting a Booth/Room at a Salon Suites-verses maybe working at a Phsyicians office-I need to make a change- Thanks!

Groupons are the devil.

I just ventured out on my own as well and I'm really loving the decision. Start up costs are in the 5K range. If your credit is good you can get a no interest for a year credit card. This is what I have done and while I'm still working at my original commission based job For my income I am also working at my own contracted location and using all my earnings to pay off the debt from start up and pay my rent. I plan on breaking off from my commission spot mid-February after taxes are in. It's a ton of work but I've also taken on a massage therapist to share my space with me and share my rent which helps.

My advice...be there. Even if you don't have clients. I pick up many from being there and talking to people. It's hard work but it will pay off.

Groupon attracts couponers who typically only coupon. So it's not the kind of thing you do to build clientele. My spa did it once and it was a total no-go. Building clientele is a agonizingly slow process. But if it's done right your foundation is firm and your loyal clients will follow you. I feel like I'm running in place sometimes and getting no where but other days I get an uplifting high from my successes.

Couple things I do...I don't discount. Period. I will give away services for free but there is no discounting, tempting as it is sometimes because you want to express your appreciation to clients you love. But the best way to do that is by being available, being helpful, being attentive, and following up. I have given away a lot of free services which I track and write off in my taxes. Giving it away doesn't devalue it. If you put a price in someone's head, it's hard to convince them to pay more the second time around. Price it appropriately and make it more valuable to them through inexpensive extra care (throw in an eye treatment or foot rub). Make it the best they've ever had and they won't even think of going elsewhere.
