Hello, I am an RN who is very interested in the skin care field. In two weeks, I'll start my esthetician classes at the Beauty School. It will take about 7 months. So I have time :-) I regularly visit the CA Board of RN (CALIFORNIA NURSING PRACTICE ACT) and recognize that all treatments performed by an RN in the skin care field must be supervised by a physician. I have no plans to work with a physician, I would like to run my own business. Right now, I'm trying to find out what benefits my RN license can give me.What kind treatments am I allowed to perform with these two licenses? For example, I found out that the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology made LED unauthorized to be practiced by an esthetician. http://www.barbercosmo.ca.gov/forms_pubs/led_ltherapy.pdf

What about me? Can I continue to use it independently If I additionally have an RN license?

Every state is different. For example, in mine, if an esthetician is supervised by a doctor, they may perform laser, Botox, fillers, etc because the doctor is governed by the medical boards. The cosmetology board is no longer regulating the esthetician working under a doctor. In our state (Idaho), nurses often practice these things under doctors, but not in their own. Nurse practitioners and physicians assistants can practice on their own or own a medi-spa business and supervise estheticians, but nurses can not.

So, while I am not knowledgeable about California regs, I can safely assume that whatever you choose to practice, your scope is going depend on what board you are bring governed by. If you're under a doctor, then probably yes, you can do LED. But if you're working on your own as an Esthetican, then probably no, even with a RN. Without a doctor, I doubt hey would classify you as medical. Unless you were to become a nurse practioner.

I am surprised, how it's  different there. In the CA unlicensed medical assistants, licensed vocational nurses, cosmetologists, electrologists, or estheticians may not legally perform these treatments under any circumstance, even if they are supervised by a doctor. You need have medical degree for perform all of this treatments in the CA.  Esthetician is not a medical degree. Registered nurses or physician assistants may perform them by supervision. Yes, I heard about a doctors who hires estheticians for some medical treatments, because of $$$. It means that doctors have violated the law. http://www.mbc.ca.gov/allied/medical_assistants_lasers.html  RN  can practice on their own a medical spa business with no more than 49% owned, the other 51% must be owned by California licensed physicians. http://www.mbc.ca.gov/licensee/medical_spas-business.pdf  Yes, it's a good idea  to become a nurse practitioner. Just need more 4 years and a lot of money. It's not for me, I am tired. I just want to be independent. In my 40th y, it's not surprise me.
