All,

How do you get people who are not skin pros to understand that there is no safe tan?  I've stated it every way I can possibly think of, written a few blogs and I still just got a question today that said..."but isn't that what summer is for, to get tan the right way, using sunscreen?"  I said, no a tan is still skin and dna UV damange.  Do any of you have any magic phrases that finally stuck with someone?

I had a client who tans in a bed ask me about products to reduce brown spots.  I told her honestly that anything I recommended would not do any good if she didn't stop tanning. She left defeated, because she doesn't want the damage, but refuses to stop tanning.  I'm at a loss.

I had a regular come in to see me yesterday after 3 days on a boat, using SPF 15 (she thought it was 50) and burned.  She told me..."I'm ready for my lecture."   LOL  I was able to gently remove some of the damage with a gentle enzyme and alot of hydrating/calming products and she was amazed at how good she looked when she left.

So I would love to hear anything you have said to someone to finally get them to see the light. No pun intended.   :)

The way I see it is people know the harm they are doing and they are going to do what they are going to do.  Don't put them down or lecture them, just simply say well if you want X results then you have to use your sunblocl.  It's the #1 defense against aging.  I live in Florida...if I see people without hyperpigmentation its a rare find!!

Thanks.  I believe the tanning client knew the damage, but what about the people that believe laying out and tanning is safe, as long as they aren't burning?

LOL the In need my Vitamin D'ers!!  I was just listening to an ASCP webinar...a suntan is actually a scar and there is no such thing as a healthy tan.  Pigment is a gauge of how much UVA damage we have acculumated which in turn ages the skin.  Sundamage can occur throughout life and it is never too late to protect yourself.

Great info, thanks!

Educate them, and realize you can't win them all.  In the mean time, if they're going to do it, they need to at least consume significant amounts of antioxidant-rich foods, the darker the better to boost skin's natural protection.  Even an amazing antioxidant rich diet only boosts protection by single-digit SPF numbers though.  Most importantly, just stick to your guns about what you know to be true, and please don't cave and tell them they can tan safely (makes it really hard for any future estheticians they see, lol).

And remember...  once they really get the damage they are doing, they'll be back!!

I've never told anyone they  can safely tan, never will!  Great advice, thanks!
