Hey!

I have a question.  So, when I went to school for esthetics swedish massage was not emphasized a lot, and I only had a little bit of training on it.  I'm applying at a spa which insists that I do full body massage.  I don't mind doing it, but I don't want to stray too far away from esthetics and makeup either.  Makeup is my passion.  Anyway, does anyone else here perform swedish (relaxation) massages, and does it affect the esthetic side of your license - do you feel like it takes away from it because it's the service most people want?  Or is it a good service to offer to get clients familiar with your touch and the other services you offer?   About what percentage of your income does it make up?

Thanks so much in advance!!!!!

Unless you are a licensed massage therapist, you are not supposed to be offering full body massage; you can get in big trouble for that, and so can your employer.

I was under the impression that as long as it wasn't a "deep tissue" massage it was ok under my state rules, but I will definitely check to see.  I don't want to compromise my license.  Thank you!

Tara is correct-unless you work in in unregulated state perhaps. Check with your state board. I am a 14 year LMT and 2 year LE.

Thanks, Deborah!

What I would suggest is to go get a few massages from different people and rather than "enjoy" pay attention to what they are doing. (tax deductible too in that case!)  If you can learn from video's Massage Warehouse has a number of them, then practice on your family members and get some feedback. I generally will start them face down, finish face up and then do the facial. It's really a good combo and will increase your bottom line.

Great ideas! Thanks so much Deborah!

ADDED:  I did go ahead and check the regulations for my state, and massaging is accepted.  I know there's a fine line, and I don't want to go into deep tissue massage, but it is something I'm allowed to do with my license.  Thanks so much for alerting me! I didn't want to get into trouble with my license. :)

I think as an Esthetican we can massage the face, neck, shoulders and arms...but anywhere else you are simply applying lotion or oil ;).

lol.  Thank you! ;)

I love doing both! It mixes it up for me. Gets me out of my chair for facials and moving around.  I have clients that do both and because I do both I sell a lot more gift certificates to clients because they have options.  I am glad I went to school for massage 6 yrs ago.

Thanks, Diane! I guess I just need to step out of my comfort zone a little bit.  :)  It definitely helps to make more money, that's for sure. :)
