I have a couple of teens coming in this week, I believe they are 15-16 (girls).  I know the consensus is usually no massage of any kind, is that correct?  I will of course have the parent sign a parental agreement but should I consult with the parents on their stand with the massage for face/neck/shoulders/hands and arms?  Maybe ask the teen if they are ok with it or just not do it at all?

Just curious what others are doing in this situation.  Thanks!!

Sheila, we have teens that come to our school, (we need the practice) and we do the massage on the face, arms and hands, decollete area just as we would for the Euro Facial.  Now I will say, they tend to like a more upbeat style of music than your average SPA music.  Parental agreement on anything I say under 18, but that is just me. But we have never had an issue with the teens getting a massage with their facials. Just our music!!! Enjoy!

Have never heard of not massaging a teen during a facial unless cystic acne where it might be painful, then I would do everywhere else, but perhaps your state is different? Sometimes, I will say "while mask is on, I will massage your_____, but usually just do it.

no I just have always heard the consensus is don't....unless I am just thinking that is more for massage therapist.  They usually say the facial is more educational but I am a pampering type of girl so to not be able to do it would stink.  Ok, well I just wanted to see what others said.  Just don't want to overstep any boundries you know.  Thanks for the imput ladies!!

Sheila, I am a 13 yr MT and do massage children and teens on occasion. Different states may not allow it but TX and LA do. When I was in esty school a mom and 10 yr old daughter came in monthly as they were all about the massage part of the facial. Even if regular massage is not allowed on teens, I really don't think that would include the areas you'd massage during a facial, so don't think you'd be overstepping boundaries.

Ok great!!  Thanks for the info!

Hello Sheila,
One would assume the parent knows all of the steps involved in a facial. Although, just a thought to quickly walk through the steps with parent and the teen (while they are together) before the facial begins. Followed by asking if there are any questions or concerns. By leaving the line of communication open their comfort level will increase and your client will enjoy the experience that much more :) You are laying the groundwork for a life long client ! Best wishes

Thanks for the advice!!

My only concern would be if a teenager may be uncomfortable being touched as they don't know the massage is part of the facial. I think they usually are just focused on coming in for treatment of their acne, especially if parents are seeking out the service for them. I've been researching for places in my area that offer Teen facials, some offer it and some don't..and the places that offer it have a very brief description about the service. I'm sure it'd be fine if you let them know ahead of time and ask if the teen and parent are okay with the massage being included for relaxation purposes.

Hi Sheila - My daughter is 16 (almost 17) and is actually enrolled in an esthetician program. She is the best one in her class when it comes to facials! So, I would suggest asking the parents about the massage part & getting a signature to cover yourself. I think the teens would enjoy it and it might even lead to an interest in your work!

The only thing I would add is that my daughter found her acne flared up temporarily after her first facial. Might be something to warn them about... BTW, if you carry Skin Script, my daughter raves about their acne line & her friends at school ask her what she uses ;-)

Thanks ladies!  I had 3 teens this week!  It was crazy!  Only one had acne, but all 3 came in for brow waxing.  It all went well and I think everyone was satisfied with their services!

I had a mom bring her teenage son to me for acne a while back and she said he would be uncomfortable with the massage part so we skipped all that and just did the facial steps, took about 30-40 minutes.  He was thrilled with his results.  I've also had moms bring in teenage girls for the pamering and skin care and did the full facial.  I think every situation is unique and there isn't one answer for all teens.

Hi Jodi, can you tell me what steps you did in the 30-40 minute facial for the teenage son? Was it more of a mini facial treatment? I don't see it on your list of facials. I am considering adding on my menu 2 choices: Basic Teen Facial for 1 hour and a Teen Acne treatment for 40 minutes, doesn't include massage just more of a focused treatment. What do you think? Would love to hear any ideas!
