I have always been interested in doing this because I just love this kind of stuff. I have had corporate jobs and I want a different pace in my life now. Scared about making a change! Was wondering how long some of you have been doing it, are you busy? What is a better way to go, spa, doctors office? Would really appreciate some input. Thanks!

Hi Amanda,

I've been an esthetician for almost 9 years.  For the first year  I worked in a day spa and for the last 8 I have been a booth renter and educator.

Once you are out of school and actually start working it can take a year or longer to build your client base.  That means that you will need a good support system to sustain yourself until you get going.  Depending on where you live, once you have built a client base your yearly income is generally between $24-$30K (this is average).

To determine what type of Esthetician you would enjoy being ask yourself some questions:

1. You say you love this kind of stuff.  What do you love about it?

2. Do you want to make people feel relaxed and pampered or do you want to treat specific conditions (acne, antiaging etc)?

3. Is there one aspect that you enjoy or have more interest in than others (makeup, skin care, waxing)

4. Are you interested in being a product rep, selling different product lines and possibly providing education?

There are so many direction you can go in once you are licensed.  It doesn't all have to be about being in the treatment room and performing services. Doing your research and discovering what you like about this industry and where you see yourself fitting in will help you make your decision.  What skills do you already possess and where might they fit in to get you where you want to be?

Good luck to you.
