Hi all I am new to this discussion forum and a newly licensed aesthetician in TN.

Here is my dilemma; I have been looking for work and not been successful in finding a good fit mainly due to the driving distance. I live in a small town that has 2 small hair salons. I am wondering if I should take the plunge and start out doing booth rental. I have started a business plan and researching some basics, but am still feeling nervous about starting a business, however I like the idea of working for myself and always have. I guess my main question is will I be able to get clientele fast enough to pay the bills and survive(thrive). Also I want to be able to retain what clientele I get, and my only experience is with school. I feel like I am taking the right steps to get started but not getting past the issue of what product line(s) to carry. Really I can only afford to carry one or two and tailor my menu accordingly. I would like to specialize in peels and have been thinking about using Image. Here is a list of products I am considering, Image, Ayur-Medic, Aroma Bella, Glo Therapeutics. If any of you have a lot of experience with these any advice would be helpful. Also would appreciate advice from those who have started their own businesses.

Hi Bess,

Ok, I think I might have posted this same questions a few months back. I could not find the perfect job, was working in the corporate worls and wanted out badly. I took a leap when a room at my salon opened up and booth rented. Started working for myself and was  scared to death. But, I am 6 weeks in and love it!!! I cannot promise you are going to have your head above water anytime soon, so plan on that. I am not by any means booked but every day I am in the salon I meet someone that is excited to knowI am there in the salon and want to book an appointment. It is going to be slow at first, butI know it is going to pay off. I bought the basics for my room and searched everywhere for the best deal before I bought anything so I could watch my little budget as much as possible. I use Vital Therapy products, non - toxic, parabin free. I LOVE this line and so do my clients!! My back bar was a tad spendy but will last me a good while. www.thefacepharmacy.com I am planning on taking the PCA peel class in December here in my town because I have heard nothing but great things about them. You have to take their class before they will sell to you. For now I bought a couple light peels from Universal Companies, just to get started and feel comfortable with what I am doing. Good luck to you, think positive and get a good marketing plan together as well, website, flyers, introduce yourself to people you meet as an esthetician and let them know you are having a special for new clients. I offer 20% off a treatment for my new clients.  Hope this little bit helps... you can do it : )

Thanks for your reply.I ended up getting an interview at a med spa for tomorrow I guess I will see if that is a good fit and if not I just might take the plunge! Do you know how much you spent total to get your booth rental running? I'm already at about $900.00 but that includes intangibles like insurance.Really the only equipment I have is a facial steamer, portable bed, and basic necessities like sheets and disposables. One thing I love about peels is that you get good results without any equipment.Downside is the cost of product. I guess starting out I would want to follow all the facial peel steps to a tee and Image can get spendy very quickly doing that with all the reccomended products.
I spent about 3K to get what I needed to start, but the bed and steamer were supplied in my room rental. I bought things on Craigslist, Ebay, and such for the larger tems, like a carpet, cabinet, etc... I spent a lot at Universal for all of the little things, and hit up Targets sheet sale to get my linens. Oh and Ross for decorations. My room turned out great and I feel like I got what I needed with that budget. Good luck a your interview or whatever you decide to do : )
