I have an interview with Ulta next week for an esthetician position.

Has anyone worked for Ulta; and, if so, was your experience a positive or negative one?

Do they require you to sign a non-compete contract?  Thanks so much!

Let me try this: Does anyone know someone who worked at Ulta?  :/

I worked at Ulta for about 10 months after I graduated and I wouldn't trade it for anything!  I got free education, mentored by an experienced esthetician on site, learned some marketing tools that work, and gained a few clients and experience.

Thanks for the reply, Jodi. :)  Did they have a non-compete?

Yes.  I believe it was within a 5 mile radius.  When I left, I was approx 5 miles away, they never pursued it to see.  I know hairstylists who left and they never did for them either.

Do you remember how long the non-compete lasts for after termination?  I ask because I had a negative experience with a company's non-compete clause in the past and am looking for employment without a non-compete if possible; or, if not, with a very, VERY reasonable one.

I interviewed with them. But did not take a position there. The pay was really low.

Thanks. I will be sure to ask a lot of questions during interview.

It is.  $10 or commission whichever is higher.  I liked the hourly because I got paid something while learning and building.

I had my interview today and asked her about the non-compete. She said that it's for while you are working at Ulta- that it doesn't prohibit you from working afterwards.  Of course, I have yet to see it;  I'm not signing anything I don't feel comfortable with.

I worked at Ulta right after I finished school and became licensed.  To me, it was a good place to start.   Ulta has a contract with Dermalogica, so that is the product line you will use.  Dermalogica provides very good education.  What I didn't care for was working every Saturday and Sunday, so I moved on after 7 or 8 months.

I agree, no flexibility in the schedule at all.  When I was hired, I worked one night a week until 9pm.  They told me they were changing that I would work Fridays and Sundays until 6, and the other 3 days until 9pm.  I said no thank you, and started looking immediately for another job.

Aside from that, I definitely valued the education I received, the employee discount, the gratis we got (which was ALOT) and the free services we could get from the salon.

I have been working at an Ulta for 3 months now. You really have to have a good management and staff assisting you if you really want to make it. I am pretty much left on my own and have to find out about skin care events without any help. It's been hard for me to keep clients coming back. Many of mine are there one time, hate the pod experience, and never return. But it is a great place to start out of school They only offer 4 free IDI classes and the rest have to be taken on your days off.
