I just invested in a Vacuum/ spray machine and was hoping to get everyone's input as to what type of liquid you prepare for the spray, and what, if any, kind of product you put on the skin prior to using the vacuum.

Hey Emily - For the spray, I like to use either a toner (I use Dermalogica) or distilled water customized with a botanical (water based essential oil).  This is what I spray onto the skin before I use the vacuum suction - just make sure to keep the vacuum suction low as not to bruise your client.  It is taking me some practice to learn that less is more.  Especially since the vacuum is great for lymph drainage and with MLD, less suction is definitely better!

Thank you so much Jennifer! So what type of client benefits from which spray? Oily/acneic with the toner and Sensitive/dry with the botanical? Also are there any contraindications for the vac that you have learned? I really appreciate your input!

There are a few ways to use the vacuum - one is to help "suck" out comedones - which you should probably think of as loosening rather than sucking since you'd have to have the vac on too high to really suck them completely out.  This is an option before extractions for congested skin or in lieu of extractions.  The other option is to use if for Manual Lymph Drainage which is great for acneic skin or puffy skin (people who are retaining water), or you can use it to help bring life to dull and tired skin by increasing the circulation.  Contraindications would Stage 3 and 4 acne because it might be too painful and it might cause the skin to erupt and scar beneath the surface.  You also don't want to use this on anyone who is undergoing cancer treatments, pregnancy, sensitive skin, really thin loose skin, any undiagnosed swelling (so not your typical water retention), sunburn, skin lesions, herpes symplex.  Basically, use it on tired, lackluster skin, puffy skin or under eye bags, congested skin or light acne.  As far as which solution to use, it is really up to you.  I like to use toners when I am helping to treat congestion and the botanicals for the manual lymph drainage.  Does this help?

Yes it does Jen! Thank you SO much!!
