Waxing: Double-dipping
What are your thoughts about double-dipping? Is it ever okay? Today I had a full leg wax and was running low on sticks. When I asked one of the girls to go out and get more, my boss came to me and asked why - she has always used the same stick for the service. I nearly fainted. I was always taught that this is wrong, and that a new stick must be used for each dip into the wax pot. My school taught this, and the State Board was also insistent that each stick must be disposed of after one use.
I am practicing in Massachusetts, and after doing some online research, I'm reading that it's fairly common for people to double dip. But I don't want to do it, I find the thought incredibly gross. The wax does not get hot enough to kill any bacteria or viruses, does it?

hmm, i dont know if it's actually illegal and it might depend upon the state. i've read both sides that say yes there is bacteria and one that says there isn't any bacteria when double dipping. i believe that it's better to not double dip to impress the client and at the least and be safe. honestly for legs, arms and back, i use the same stick. for face, bikini, underarm i use different sticks each time. i have 3 different size sticks. one for eyebrows only, one for big areas and a long skinny one for everything else

I am not sure there is too many pathogens from the legs that could cause problems, BUT if other estheticians are sharing the same wax pot and doing lip waxes, underarm waxes, bikini and brazillians, there is a problem.
One of California's top 10 violations is double dipping. So they seem very concerned about cross contamination.
There is no guarantee that you are spreading germs each time, but there is no solid proof it is safe to double dip either. I think especially if you share wax, it is ALWAYS a good rule of thumb to refrain from double dipping so there are NO surprises/gambles. Could you imagine a lawsuit from a client who received herpes or anything else from another one of your clients?

Thanks, ladies. It's frustrating to me that there's no clearly defined answer to this. Isn't it against State Board? I guess I will have to call them.

Claire....I actually found this post when I was doing my googling about double dipping, so I read it already. Just read it again. Thank you for helping me stick to my guns. I am very much opposed to the idea of double dipping...was just looking for real and technical information to back me up. :)

I don't double dip on any area, however, in Texas we are allowed to use rollers. Seems to me, we wouldn't be allowed to if contamination were an issue, we are not allowed to double dip.

Unfortunately double-dipping is never okay to offer in a professional service. Yes many people do it but the public is becoming more and more savy and as we all know are very quick to sue you as well. Why put yourself at risk for possibly transmitting something and why put your clients health at risk over a $10 brow wax.
After listening to Kirsten speak at our Wax Show this weekend and discuss that ASCP recieves over 100 waxing claims a month that range from 0-100 in severity we really need to do better in this area. Double-dipping is something that we can control.

why does "the wax queen" say it's totally fine to double dip? she uses a plastic spatula and says it's totally fine and she is always booked at skin shows and supposedly the industry standard. i think it was skin inc that did an article on it and they had some scientists that say there is harmful bacteria and other scientists that said there is no harmful bacteria..grrrrrr

She does it because she considers herself 'old school'. I went to a class at her place yesterday and we did use the plastic large spatulas but then put them in her waxoff after each dip. Of course you'd need 10-20 spatulas and they're about $16 a pop.
Personally, I do not want someone putting wax on my face after someone double dipped during a brazilian, butt crack or other service like that. It just grosses me out.

Sticks are cheaper than a lawsuit. Hopefully your doctor uses a fresh clean tongue depressor when he examines you and I bet you hope he does too! I was taught in school to not double dip and luckily there was never any groaning from the admin about our stick usage. It is obvious that being thrifty is the crux of this debate. I really wish there was some scientific research done to finally prove to the naysayers that bacteria can exist in a wax-product. I am under the impression that only boiling something kills most organisms and I don't think anyone has boiling wax. Sometimes I think I go through alot of sticks but I'd rather not embarrass myself within the industry or bring an unfavorable reputation to the industry as a whole by causing injury or harm to a client because I was being cheap or lazy.

i buy all different sizes of sticks for different body parts so i really dont feel like i'm wasting at all. no place i ever worked did this but now that i have my own i just buy different sizes and use them up no problem!
