Some great tips here! I hope all the students are tuning in and paying attenion!
I have worked in this industry off & on for the last 30 years as a cosmetologist and as a sales consultant for a distributor for, I am now attending school for esthetics, a few things I would say in answer to this is, put away your cell phones during school and once you are out of school only use it between clients or on breaks, there is nothing worse than having your hairstylist or esthetician working on you and being on the phone or using facbook or other aps, another is learn how to promote yourself, learn how to create flyers, newsletters or even business cards for yourself, take them with you and hand them out to people, if you are in school you should already be doing this to bring clients in while you are there, also if you are working in a salon or spa and are slow offer to help clean rather than sit and do nothing, our instructor was just saying today how important that aspect is and I totally agree with her, don't leave your clean up for someone else to do. Continue your education after you graduate, if you are using a skin care line and they offer classes take them, it is well worth it! go to the trade shows and take classes there also, learn all you can while in school you only get out of it what you put into it, so get everything out of it while you can.
WOW! great question and great answers!
I would say, like someone already mentioned, get some business, marketing and accounting training. Some counties offer these courses for free or low fee through their small business division.
Learn as much as you can of social media. You will save thousands of dollars by doing it yourself or having someone helping you with it. Think twice about hiring a social media "guru".
You may want to start working for someone else while you get experience. Some things might be thought as common sense or easy to remember, but unless you are doing them and getting in the habit of things, you won't do them. Examples are how to greet clients, how to charge, how to accept tips, how scheduling works, the flow of a skincare business, etc. If you want to learn the hard way, start your own business right away, but you will save yourself some suffering and undue stress if you get acquainted with the busines first working as an employee. You can then decide what things you will do and which ones you won't.
network network network. Did I mention network? What area of skincare would you like to specialize in? connect with folks in the field. In addition to this association, linkedin.com is very good. Connect with people in your geographical area (potential clients such as business folks, wedding planners, etc).
Keep your ethics intact and remain professional always - including your personal FB page. I had a product rep who "befriended" me on FB. Her personal postings were highly political and such a turn off! I, not only de-friended her, I also don't want to do business with her.
And last but not least, just because you get your license, doesn't mean that you're done :-) The aesthetics field is never ending and once you get something down, they've already come up with something newer and better.
