One piece of advice I was given as a New Esthetician was to specialize in something. I have a few things that I love to do and want to explore and learn more about. Fresh out of school, I realized that waxing is not one of them, when I thought it would be. I know its a money maker but I JUST LOVE LEARNING ABOUT SKINCARE!!! I cringe when I get a waxing clients. So, just curious....

Do you specialize in something? What is it? Do you use that specialty to market yourself? Do you feel that this is good advice and that Esthy's should not try to be the jack of all trades??

I think finding a specialty that you're passionate about is better for you and your clients. If you do something that you love and are passionate about, your clients will definitely notice the difference and will want to come back to you for more. I've tried being the "Jack of all trades" and all it did was burn me out trying to do all of those different things.

I will say that the additional knowledge from learning all of those services has helped me out when clients wanted advice about how other spa treatments (ie. tanning) would affect their skin. It can't hurt to research some things that your clients might have questions about.

I generally tell people i specialize in whatever their specific concern is- Its a very good selling tool and it builds loyalty when your clients feel they are seeing someone who specializes in their specific concern.

Naturally, i dont know everything about everything. So if its something i'm not as confident about treating- i go home and research it for hours and hours and immerse myself in learning everything i can. It keeps me learning and interested and i never get bored.

Skincare is a great specialty for you to have- products can carry a lot of loyalty and you can get repeat sales for years if you sell the right product to the right person!!!

I hate waxing too- laser hair removal however is the best thing since sliced bread and cars!!
